Pre 1923 sources edit

Hello! I noticed that you added a number of sources to images (example) to corroborate PD status. I don't mind this, but as far as I understand copyright i) this could only be relevant if the image is actually a scan from the book you cite (Are you sure it is?) and ii) for two dimensional old art objects, the (re-)publication in books is not relevant for copyright per Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. Only the production year of the artwork matters. bamse (talk) 19:57, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi bamse. Yes, I'm begining to see pre-1923 publication for non-US publication is not too meaningful, so I'm probably not going to upload the obviously poor quality monochromes, except maybe as a temporary image, to be replaced by a color photo. On that count, I should probably delete tag the flying granary image (File:Shingisan engi-flying granary scene-Murayama-ed-Wakanmeigasen-pp55-6.jpg), but I realized only after I initiated the upload process that this picture was already available in color.
On copyright policy, I too initially didn't think uploaders had the burden of providing initial publication for centuries old art. And it looks like many images are uploaded with that understanding, using Permission: {{PD-Japan}} {{PD-Art}} tags. But I reread the section under copyright for art, and it stated that artwork (paintings) is not considered published by virtue of being created or shown in galleries. I think I also read there, or elsewhere that for art that is anonymous or is a pseudo-author, there still was the burden of establishing first publication. So I am not quite comprehending the status right now, since I am getting these mixed signals. --Kiyoweap (talk) 17:36, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

On above (descr: "Trani Cathedral, detail of the mosaic, ascension of Alexander")scrutiny I mistook the dating and authorship. The source was actually:

Barral y Altet, Xavier (1989), “Les pavements romans de Saint-André-de-Rosans et de Ganabobie: réflexions sur le sens des images et sur le travvail des mosaïstes”, in Bulletin de la Société d'études des Hautes-Alpes[1], pages 246.

It claims "domaine publique" so I tagged it with {{PD-France}}; this may mean it has to migrate to fr.wikipedia or something like that. --Kiyoweap (talk) 00:18, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

(descr: "Fig. 15: Otrante, nef centrale: Ascension d'Alexandre.")
On these files I added {{PD-old-100}} licensing. As per COM:PDART, since it applies to "old stained glass", by extension, I judge it must also apply for old mosaics. --Kiyoweap (talk) 12:51, 4 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
For these files, I found the correct citation to be:
Barral y Altet, Xavier (1989), “Les pavements romans de Saint-André-de-Rosans et de Ganabobie: réflexions sur le sens des images et sur le travvail des mosaïstes”, in Bulletin de la Société d'études des Hautes-Alpes[2], pages 246.
It claims "domaine publique" so I tagged it with {{PD-France}}, so if another bot tags it for deletion from this, it's fine if it gets deleted now that I've saved the citation info and description entries here. --Kiyoweap (talk) 00:25, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Magog the Ogre: Thanks for the tip. I'm not in the habit of makings such moves from en to commons, and I wasn't aware of the availability of such a tool.
I believe the help I examined was the one I clicked to from the "candidate for moving on commons" tag.
Now that you remind me, maybe I need to remove that tag on the en page too, or will some bot do that?--Kiyoweap (talk) 05:06, 29 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
No, you have to manually add the NowCommons tag. As patrolling administrator, I already deleted it on English Wikipedia.   Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:18, 29 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
I did go back and notice it gone. Thanks for deleting it and the info it needs manual maintenace. --Kiyoweap (talk) 05:46, 29 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
