Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

This year the show takes place again from August 18th to August 23rd. Have you time to get there in order to take some photos? Would be nice to get a positive answer. Довёл Вашу правку до конца: нашёл в Category:Architecture на третьем оттуда уровне Category:Architecture of Russia by region, и создал по аналогии с Architecture of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast новую Category:Architecture of Moscow, в которую включил Category:Grottoes of Moscow, внутри которой был этот файл. Если удаляете какую-то (пусть и красную) категорию, старайтесь восстановить связь. К тому же укрупнённые, общие категории, по моему мнению, участники мониторят меньше, чем какие-то локальные.--AndreyA (talk) 18:43, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Хорошо, постараюсь. Я готовился загружать свои фотографии сделанные в Кусково и тут мне попались фотографии SiefkinDR из английской статьи Kuskovo. Там все категории были красные. Я решил их отправть в Category:Kuskovo.--Lodo27 (talk) 18:57, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Ecть подозрение, что этот рисунок - зеркально перевёрнут. Справочно, вот File:Moscow, Dormition on Pokrovka.jpg то же самое "как надо" (ну не мог же дворовый фасад полностью повторять парадный с Покровки). Оказывается что он НЕ перевёрнут! :))) Это видно, если посмотреть на вот эти две фотки: со двора File:Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Pokrovka 11.jpg и с улицы File:Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Pokrovka 12.jpg. Со двора лестница прямая (без поворота) и слева от лестницы поднимается высокое кирпичное ограждение. С улицы этого нет. Титков

Вы загружаете фотографии Н. Титкова. Пожалуйста, имейте в виду, что они не совсем подходят для коммонс. Они подходят, но не совсем: сбоку испорчены полоской с указанием на автора. Поэтому наверняка со временем найдётся трудолюбивый участник, который вырежет из фотографий эти бесполезные довески. And now for something completely different. Ну, я так, предупредил... Вам надо купить программу для подавления шумов. Ещё можно украсть такую программу. Решайте сами, но раз фотошоп купили, то и шумодавку сможете купить. Судя по отзывам, очень хороша программа NeatImage. Работает не только сама по себе, но и как плагин к фотошопу.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 17:28, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

И ведь iso 100, и выдержка 1/800, и размер не максимальный — значит, лучше этой камере не сделать. Съёмка на iso 80 не сильно исправит результаты, в которых виновата крошечная матрица, нестойкая к шуму. Включать шумодав в камере означает делать замыленные фотоснимки. Некуда бежать. Перестаньте есть, накопите полтысячи долларов и купите подержанную зеркалку. Это небывалое счастье, trust me.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 17:40, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Фотографировать я начал недавно - пока только учусь. В будущем обязательно куплю зеркалку. По фоткам Казанской церкви нельзя судить о качестве моей камеры, т.к. на всех этих снимках я учился пользоваться фотошопом - там везде искусственное небо и ещё много чего сделано - одним словом экспериментировал - в итоге получилось не очень хорошо, зато плезный опыт! --Lodo27 (talk) 18:15, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Спасибо за правильное название Altayskaya Street. "Панорамщики" похоже решили добить русский раздел вики. Без фотографий зданий какая это будет энциклопедия? Мне нужно перенести его на Викисклад, разрешение дано по-эстонски: Eesti Maa-amet lubab kõigil seda pilti kasutada igal eesmärgil koos allika äramärkimisega.- Перевод: Эстонский Земельный департамент разрешает всем использовать это изображение в любых целях вместе с указанием источника [2]. По-английски написано другое:This is an image of Estonian Land Board from [2]. Reproduction is authorised, provided the original source and author is acknowledged. Вопрос:Достаточно ли моего перевода на русский эстонского текста, как разрешение для Викисклада. Автор:Эстонский земельный департамент, Источник:[3]. Я поднял изображение в немецкую Вики, возникли вопросы, поэтому наверно проще убрать оттуда изображение и сразу загрузить из эстонской Вики на Викисклад? Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning.
