Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. Nebalia.png

I suggest you when creating images such as Nebalia.png to write numbers instead of words and then to add a key from numbers to text in the information page of the image. While this is longer to do and less intuitive to read, it allows non english speakers to use the images in their wikipedias. See for example http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Robal.png that is used in http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insecta

I normally upload using the file upload script in perl, so check if my picture would be a good addition, find a fitting name, store it on my local uploads folder, then upload a batch of them using the script when I feel like it. Hi Lycaon. I'm a bit worried about the voting policy. For example, in the voting Template:Featured pictures candidates/Image:Golden Gate Bridge Yang Ming Line.jpg, a vote some hours after the 15 days period was counted, in my case not -> if User:El Comandante had administrated the voting, the picture would probably have been featured! I think the same policy should be applied to all votings. On COM:FPC it is not stated until which time votes are accepted ("After the end of the voting period the result will be determined on day 15 after nomination." -> but when is the end of the voting period?) My vote was added on day 15 according to the timetable on the bottom of the page; so it would not be contradictorial with respect to the guidelines to count the vote. --MRB 16:05, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

I agree with you that a strict solution is best practice. But I think a sentence like "The voting period lasts 15 days (= 15 * 24 hours) after the time of nomination; votes added after this period aren't counted." should be added to the voting policy rules. At the moment, this is an unwritten law. How should people know that their vote isn't valid any more if the rule isn't stated clearly? --MRB 20:41, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Ferrofluid FPC candidate

Howdy! per your comments on the FP nomination page, I've located the original image and uploaded it. It's less striking as a thumbnail, though the added resolution and surrounding whitespace probably help the larger version. Please check again to see if this new image satisfies the requirements. If not, I'd appreciate any comments on how to improve the image (or any direct help!), since I'm fairly inexperienced at this, and don't have a particularly good eye for composition, or any Photoshop skills to speak of. :) GeeJo 23:24, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

I classified the images “featured” of July June in corresponding files of featured picture”, I also added the template “featured picture” to the images. Does J hope that I did that correctly? As I noticed that you already made this work say me if it is not well. I did not include/understand yet how you make the calculation of the votes? There is an automatic system? re: Socks ??

Hm. I can certainly see why you are suspicious. Digon3 was created on the 18th August, Sunshade1 a week later on the 23rd. Sunshade1 has nominated 3 images for FPC, all being Digon's images. [1] [2] [3]

Digon showed up to comment on the last one despite never having been informed about it, on-wiki at least. On-wiki there seems to have been no communication between these two, despite the fact that Sunshade1 is such an enthusiastic fan of Digon's. They both have similar commenting styles when voting on FPCs, like: reason, reason, reason.

User:Dbenbenn, User:Arnomane and User:Ausir all have CheckUser status and may be able to help you if you wish to pursue this further. I would contact them via email.

Thanks for help with the taxonomy (if that is the right word) for this flower. I have tried to add a category to the image but there is no category called Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus. There is the article Hemerocallis or the category Hemerocallidaceae. I get lost in this stuff but to find a place for it, I created Hemerocallis lilio-ashphodelus. I added the hyphen because that is the way it is set out in the Wikipedia article "Daylily" No idea of that makes any sense, but I thought the image needed a place to be found. --KenWalker 00:25, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Your revert of my change in Image:Euphorbia polychroma.jpg

Hello, I do not think you understand why I have removed (and will do so again) the category Euphorbia from that picture. Reasons:

1. this picture is referenced from the species article Euphorbia polychroma which itself is in Category:Euphorbia; this can be seen in the section Links on the image page;
2. if we leave every picture that's in a species article in the resp. genus/family category, load times for users would be too long, even for DSL users, and it all contributes to Wiki traffic which is always at the edge; also, why anyway? read on:
3. if you miss something like a pictorial overview, then please write such an article and put it in the family category - be aware however that that must be maintained forever;
4. there is no end in sight with submitted fine images, so the problems in 2+3 will get worse.

Well, I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised.

I clicked on your user name in the review of my picture in the featured picture area, and expected someone who comments on other people's photos but has no photography background himself. Instead I find that you not only have a gallery of great images of your own, but images from what was once my chosen field of Marine Biology. It's a field I'd probably still be in if not for the fact that a block of my life disappeared simply because we have a fool for a president (I'm from the U.S. if not obvious). He seems to enjoy to attacking random countries who have nothing to do with the attacks on ours while Bin Laden still walks free and threatens Europe and the U.S..... Enough of that topic, Bush just pisses me off.

I've switched to corporate life and weekend SCUBA to scratch my Marine Bio itch. It's pretty desolate in the California Channel Islands, the Balance of Nature totally out of balance now. I now find I have to head to the tropics for a good week of diving.

I'm new to Wikipedia - 2 years use, but only 2 days attempting edits - so I have a lot to learn. Most of the Featured Pictures I think are great. However, I see some pictures listed as Featured which I'm not that impressed by and some rejected which seem terrific, so I'm still a little confused as to the criteria. If you ever have any feedback that may help me get the hang of it, I'd ne more than Happy to hear it. I'm not tryimg to get you to change anything, but the composition of that Times Square image was as good as it could get on that night. To the left was a group of drunken prostitutes, to the right was a blazing stoplight, below me were 500 plus pedestrians, and behind me a consruction ditch that would have eaten me if I fell backwards, thus the kind police officer's assistance. I took 38 photos in a few minutes, and this was the only one that didn't have some glaring flaw, so it is what it is, and I really like it, but that's my opinion. I'd just never seen colors like that before and had to have it.

Lycaon - Thanks for your Feedback

First - Thanks again for your feedback. But now, how do I delete that image from the nomination - All Of Them, including mine. This has turned into a joke. All I wanted was to post and get feedback and learn. Instead this has turned into a strange philosophical and political battle which seemed to have existed before I ever signed on. My technically impoper photo has just fueled the fire - certainly not my intent.

Again, your feedback has been the only insightful info I have received and I appreciate that. Even after I put up the comparative stairwell photo, all I get back is "Don't like it." Not much help in the learning process. Any info you have regarding additional rules, guidelines, or the many unspoken codes that I know nothing about would be hugely appreciated.

•  Info I have been informed by a kind and helpful gentleman that the correct procedure to stop a nomination is to state that I, as nominator, revoke my nomination, and it will then be removed ASAP. So, regretfully, even though this visit to the FP process has been a joyous one (something similar to an unanaesthetized evisceration, or a tooth extraction with a hammer and pliers), I hereby request such revocation, and beg that it be quick, mercyful, and painless. Amphipod anatomy illustration

Hi Lycaon - thanks for the note; your new version is an improvement, but I think still needs more. I've made a .png version (right) illustrating what I think would help, for the following reasons: (1) a lot of people don't have .svg reading/editing ability so can't see it larger than the image page auto-size (see e.g. Alvesgaspar's comments at Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:Reinel wind rose.png; applies to me too); (2) a larger text size is better for people with poor eyesight, and also enables many people to read the captions at thumbnail picture size in articles (and thus able to read the image captions alongside the article text without having to open the image page separately); and (3) using kinked lines to indicate the body sections better (they don't have to be vertical!). My version used 12 point text for the smaller parts and 14 point for the main body parts, maybe it could be made even larger; I think there's probably room for 16 point text. Sextant

I know you did, I have supported your picture :-).

The problem only exists in the svg file uploaded to Wikipedia, the thumbnail image seems corrupt in the candidates page (please see the picture here) . In my computer, I can see the picture OK. I have tried converting from CorelDraw Graphic Suite X3, png, bitmap, tiff, .... with the same result.

Internationalisation

...understood by other people. If the images contain labels or captions in a specific language, it is difficult to use them in a different language/script environment. Please, be considerate to other languages and cultures and furnish your beautiful images with internationalised labels and captions in the description field, not in the image itself. • Hi. Your remarks are irrelevant when it concerns svg images. The text is imbedded in the file and can be altered (translated) with a simple text editor (eg. Notepad). This is one of the major advantages of using svg. -- Lycaon 12:02, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Hi. The point is, A) the image itself must be manipulated AND B) a new version must be uploaded every time this is done. As for A) - not everybody is willing or indeed has the capacity to do so. This means having a SVG editor and learning how to use it, or understanding XML itself. As for B) - This simply results in absolutely unecessary copies of the same image over and over again, with all languages/scripts used. Do you know that there are 250 language versions of the Wikipedia? Do you really think we should potentially have 250 versions of each image with narrative labels and/or captions? That's why it is much simpler for everybody to have one image, which is labelled in a language-neutral fashion and which can be used without downloading, editing, uploading, creating duplicates etc. The advantages are obvious. Please, try to think in a global perspective: Not everybody is as computer/graphics literate as you are, not everybody speaks english, not everybody uses latin script. --AtonX 13:25, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Rules

There's a huge difference between letting someone know you love an image and letting them know you hate it. There's so many comments bordering on insult and incivility on featured pictures, for something that should require a vote in the first place. Skull

thankyou for your support. originally for the skull i had 3 books, 1 in german one in english and one with latin names. the one with latin names was a single skull with all the names mixed and i could not know what was what. with some cross references ( with the other books) i could get somethings in order. but as you notice they are not perfect.
