Hello, Maphobbyist!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Madagascar: Correcting the map of countries with English as an official language edit

Hello Maphobbyist,

Thanks for your good work with South Africa on that map, but the way more obvious fault still lies with Madagascar which MUST be grey, anything else is absolutely wrong (or, if you will, even one-sided). 87.182.212.22 16:01, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey, it's me again; thank you and you're welcome. But I'm just a little confused that it seems you accidentally (?) "switched" Ethiopia into an anglophone country at the same time while working on the map? Greetings 87.182.212.22 19:07, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:LatinUnion.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:Original_distribution_of_wolf_subspecies-en.png edit

First, thank you for this excellent map. Second, please see on wikipedia File_talk:Original_distribution_of_wolf_subspecies-en.png, where we ask that it be updated to show Canis lupus rufus to refect the latest MSW3 designation of it as a Subspecies of Canis lupus instead of Canis rufus as it used to be, which is the designation we're using in the articles in which this map is used. Third, could we have a simpler version of this map with only one color called "Original Distribution of non-domesticated Canis lupus" or some such? Actually I think "historical range" is more customary than "historical". This is needed as soon as possible. To incorporate C.l. rufus all you have to do is assign a color to the blank space including Florida. Even if your answer is "no", thanks again for this excellent map and keep up the good work! 67.246.33.203 06:35, 23 June 2012 (UTC) aka "Chrisrus" on Wikipedia.Reply

Countries that recognize Christmas as a Public Holiday.png edit

Hello! Thank you very much for the creative map (Countries that recognize Christmas as a Public Holiday.png)! Some refinement:

 • 1. Denmark - 3 day.
 • 2. Crimea - is part of the Russian Federation - 1 day
 • 3. Donetsk People's Republic - non official - [1] [2] [3]
 • 4. Luhansk People's Republic - 1 day - [4] [5]
 • 5. Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic - 1 day - [6]
 • 6. Kosovo - 3 day - [7]

A small question, in some countries there is "New year vacations (новогодние каникулы)" in the Russian Federation in 2005-2011 -5 day, now 10 day (in 2017/2018 - 30 dec. - 8 jan. [8]). Does it make sense to specify them, because they have already become traditional? New year vacations - Russian Federation, Donetsk People's Republic, South Ossetia [9] [10]

Mediterranean biome map edit

Hi Maphobbyist, is there any way you can alter or modify the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome map (this one) where you'd include a portion of southeast Australia too, such as Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra and Wollongong (excluding the Blue Mountains) within the biome as they feature sclerophyl forests as seen in Adelaide, Perth and other "Mediterranean climate" cities. The vegetation of Sydney is definitely not temperate forest (as seen here) - Sydney is usually absurdly lumped with the UK, Europe, Tasmania, eastern US and NZ - Which is really fallacious, as Sydney is more drier and hotter with vegetation that actually resemble those in the Med region rather than those in the cool, moist regions, despite its humid subtropical climate. By the way, I don't know to change or even download SVG files. So I thought that you maybe you can do this. ~ Meganesia (talk) 10:42, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Meganesia. Unfortunately, I also don't know to edit and upload SVG files. I pressed to revert in that file, which is the only thing any user like me with no knowledge of SVG files can do - and which did not "correct" anything. You are absolutely correct with your detailed and accurate explanation, none of these two files and none of their edits are remotely accurate, in regard to Australia and indeed to other places like the Middle East. If they were PNG files I could have corrected them, but with SVG files I am useless. I also want to find a user who knows how to edit SVG files and correct both the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome map and Temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. I have not come across any accurate maps in Wikimedia Commons which correctly show the global range of the sclerophyll forests and the temperate forests, particularly in these places. Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop is also a solution, provided there are sources for the graphist to make use. I did put a request for obsolete and complicated (for me) PNG maps about the time zones in Europe in January: Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop/Archive/2018, where I provided detailed and external sources for the graphist who requested it in order to update these maps. Here is also the exchange between the graphist and me: User talk:Goran tek-en#Help in uploading.
When I typed the words "Mediterranean, forest(s), woodland(s), scrubs or biome" in Google images, the usual maps ommitting the southeast of Australia appear, but when I typed just "sclerophyll forest map" in Google Images, immediately (to my pleasant surprise) maps of Australia showing the sclerophyll biomes appear, such as [11] and [12]. These two maps are good sources to request a change (at least) for Australia in both files. The other large inaccuracy which caught my eye are also the actually non-existent large temperate forest biomes in semi-arid central Turkey, most of semi-arid lowland Azerbaijan and in the semi-arid Zagros Mountains in Iran, which are mainly steppe biomes TR1, TR2, TR3, AZ1, AZ2, IR1 and IR2. Maphobbyist (talk) 23:37, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Glad to see someone else noticing those ostensible flaws in these fallacious maps. I really hope that somebody would update or correct them. Yep, I noticed the upper parts of Iraq and Iran being labeled under "temperate forests", which is really absurd considering that region is borderline semi-arid. We should really find someone correcting these misleading errors. Oh and thanks for these links. I really appreciate it. I'll try making a request at the workshop there. ~ Meganesia (talk) 08:14, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Update edit

I have updated File:Uganda CIA map PL.png. In File:Trojkat Ilemi.png one would have to draw the borders of South Sudan in the small scale map and I don't know how to do it well. ---Botev (talk) 20:46, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much for your edit. Never mind about the other map. I have undertaken a very big task of including South Sudan (and also Montenegro) in hundreds of PNG maps where they are required, as well as other possible missing updates in those maps. I will defer the SVG maps (which I don't know how to edit) and non-English language maps like File:Trojkat Ilemi.png to the future, once I have updated the PNG maps. Because it seems like it was reverted due to a lack of source, and the UN Geoscheme I found doesn't separate it from East Africa: http://www.un.org/esa/population/publications/worldageing19502050/pdf/96annexii.pdf. Thank you for your updates, but I think these maps are not necessary anymore because of their quality as compressed images. --Master Uegly (talk) 13:51, 19 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

South Sudan border in maps request edit

I will see what can be done at the weekend. It will be a question of finding equivalent maps that do have South Sudan and Remnant Sudan and copying and pasting, hoping they fit. It may take me some time. The SVG format is very good for that sort of thing though. I cannot do the PNGs like that, but if I come across SVG versions, you could replace the PNG files with the SVG versions.

The best app I know (or, to be frank, the only app I know, for creating and editing SVG images is a free one; Inkscape. You can get some spectacular results. It is worth downloading it and playing with what it can do. It takes time and experimentation to learn all the tricks, but it is pretty intuitive. The main challenge is not the programme itself but learning to work out what someone else has done to create an image, and I am still not a master there.

Hogweard (talk) 11:33, 26 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the reply. Please take it at your own pleasure. I will also do my part on the easier PNG maps where I can copy and paste the borders, when I also find equivalent maps and sizes, which I did on many maps about this topic. Infact, when I came across PNG dupicates of SVG maps with the border of South Sudan, I replaced many of them, and will do so when I discover them. Maphobbyist (talk) 13:19, 26 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I fixed the border in File:Archivo:Italianomundo.svg. Thanks for the advice. NACLE (talk) 07:09, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:BANZSL map.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hey, it's pretty easy to edit svg files with the tool Inkscape. It's free to use.

This is the common blank world map to create works out of: File:BlankMap-World-Sovereign_Nations.svg

If you need dependencies like the ones in the Caribbean, just download and recolor this file: File:Countries_and_dependencies_in_which_Condor_operates.svg
