First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

Hello, McGeddon~commonswiki!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the   Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot

File:Julian Beever artwork in Buenos Aires.jpg edit

File:Julian Beever artwork in Buenos Aires.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

This media was probably deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Cthulhu.png, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Cthulhu.png).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments edit

Something a bit special happened last month: you probably took part in a photographic world record! Last year’s Wiki Loves Monuments competition set a world record, and the early numbers from this year look even better. We received 370,000 images from 12,000 people across 53 countries. This was the first year that the UK has taken part in the contest, and we are overjoyed to have received no fewer than 11,995 entries from 573 contributors.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the UK was organised by volunteers with backing from Wikimedia UK, the local charity that supports Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects in helping to share educational materials, such as your photos, and making them available to all.

If you want to get more involved, Wikimedia UK is offering free training on how to edit Wikipedia, and workshops on honing your photographic skills. You've made that first step, why not take the next?

You can register your interest here.

Wikimedia UK relies entirely on donations and receives no government funding. If you would like to support the charity in its mission, please consider donating now. Membership costs £5 and ensures you keep up to date with activities both around the country and online.

You can contribute here.

Speaking for myself, it has been great fun to go out taking pictures and learn about local history, and I hope you enjoyed yourself too. For now, it’s over to the judges. We’ll be announcing the winners in early November.

On behalf of the organisers and volunteers who made Wiki Loves Monuments UK happen, thank you!

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear McGeddon~commonswiki,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

And by the way: the winning pictures of this year's international contest have been announced. Enjoy!

Hello. You've been captioning the Dim Sum photos over at Wikipedia as "A [deleted] scene from the film", but the images on Commons are credited as "Photo by Nancy Wong". Are these on-set photos that you took yourself, or stills from the film that you've just accidentally applied boilerplate credits to at Commons? Wikipedia has to be a little more careful with the usage rights of film stills, so it'd be good to know which they are. --McGeddon (talk) 21:18, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

See above post. This account is by Nancy Wong. --Túrelio (talk) 22:07, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I just wanted to check that she hadn't accidentally copy-and-pasted "Photo by Nancy Wong" onto some uploaded film stills from Dim Sum, given that she's been captioning them as simply "A scene from the film" over at Wikipedia. --McGeddon (talk) 23:08, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello, all: I, Nancy Wong, aka Edmunddantes have not "accidentally copy-and-pasted" my own photos, "Photo by Nancy Wong" on any of the photos I've uploaded. These are my personal photos from "Dim Sum" from 1983. They are casual snapshots I took myself in San Francisco which I had kept for 30 years and am now releasing. I'll be uploading some more photos later today 2/24/14 and would like you all to know that my photos belong to me and that I'm sharing them with the wiki world and these photos do not need to be tagged. Thanks very much for your cooperation.

Dim Sum photos edit

‎"Gallery: actually, restore original captions since I may be wrong about provenance" Hi McGeddon: Thank you for all your help in cleaning up the info with my uploaded photos. I'll be uploading some more of my 30 year old photos onto wiki today 2/24/14 and please don't be concerned that the photos are using any boiler plate captions. All photos that say "photo by Nancy Wong" are just that. Thank you, Nancy Wong aka Edmunddantes San Francisco, California 2/24/14

Dim Sum photos edit

"- I noticed a few of your Dim Sum photos were just described as being from "an indie film" without naming it"

There's a reason why I don't label the Dim Sum photos with "Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Luck." 1) The candid snapshots I took in the spring of 1983 were of the first shooting of this film--Wayne Wang re-shot 60% of it months later after script doctor Ron Bass was brought in to rework the script written by Terrel Seltzer. I don't emphasize the formal name because they are just snapshots, and I was not hired officially to record anything. I wasn't given an assignment or paid because I was just a friend of the film people and I happened to be around. These are my personal snapshots (I spent my own money on film and processing) and don't represent the final film, but after 30 years, they are kind of interesting. 2) This film is not one of Wayne Wang's best or even well-known or popular films. Thanks again for all your help. --Nancy Wong/aka Edmunddantes https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woman_with_Yorkshire_terrier_2.jpg

adding an image to article edit

Did I do okay in adding the image of Ted Fang to wiki page? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Independent

San Francisco Chronicle edit

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Chronicle

What do you think of the scan from the front page of the SF Chronicle August 1999? I explain that the front page photos were taken by me, but the correct photo caption should read: "Nancy Wong/Special to the Chronicle" which means I took the photos, but I was not a Chronicle photographerr. I have spent many hours in the office of the management back then, in both photo and news departments where I was told I was not a Chronicle photographer, my photos didn't belong in the Chronicle and that the images I put into the paper's archives had to be deleted. The noontime announcement about the newspaper sale came on a Friday, so there were no employees around. They delayed the announcement for 1/2 hour in order to gather the staff, and finally, a staff photographer wandered in. Amazingly, she decided to sit down during the announcement (lower right hand corner). I happened to bring in a camera that day (very unusual since I was not part of the shooting staff) and took photos. I didn't know any of them were actually used until I saw the next day's paper. So this is the reason that the photos belong to me, and not the SF Chronicle.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.102.74.27 (talk • contribs)

Wayne Wang photo message to cropbot edit

Why has the Cropbot cropped my photos of Wayne Wang? I want to keep the black frame on both photos: if you don't realize it, this feature means that the photographer shot full frame and cropped in the camera, not afterwards. There's even a name for these photographers: "black line photographers." Please revert back to the full frame. Thank you. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WAYNEWANG1981.jpg
