Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Bilder

Hallo Molgreen,

ich habe gerade deine Bilder kategorisiert und bin dabei über einige wirklich schöne Bilder gestoßen. Deswegen will ich mich nun herzlich bei Dir für die tollen Windenergiebilder bedanken! Mach weiter so, solche Bilder können wir hier wirlich gebrauchen! Du kommst nicht zufällig demnächst in Janneby vorbei? Von den dortigen Nordex-Anlagen (neue Baureihe) fehlen uns nämlich bisher noch welche... Naja, wie dem auch sei, wirklich gute Arbeit! Allerdings, wenn ich mir zum Abschluss doch noch eine kleine Kritik erlauben darf, die Bilder ließen sich einfacher kategorisieren, wenn im Titel der Inhalt erkennbar wäre. Ein "Windrad" wär z.B. ganz praktisch. Ist aber nur ein kleiner Schönheitsfehler, da sie ja über die Windenergie-Kategorie auffindbar sind. Viele Grüße, Andol (talk) 15:54, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Es handelt sich um ein Schiff/Boot (nicht(!) "bleibend an öffentlichen Wegen, Straßen oder Plätzen befinden"). Deshalb bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob "FoP-Germany" greift: "Dieses Bild einer geschützten Arbeit fällt unter den Artikel § 59 des deutschen Urheberrechtsgesetzes, nach dem es „zulässig ist, Werke, die sich bleibend an öffentlichen Wegen, Straßen oder Plätzen befinden, mit Mitteln der Malerei oder Graphik, durch Lichtbild oder durch Film zu vervielfältigen, zu verbreiten und öffentlich wiederzugeben. Bei Bauwerken erstrecken sich diese Befugnisse nur auf die äußere Ansicht.“"

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!

Dear Molgreen,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Einladung zur Teilnahme an Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Deutschland

Hallo Molgreen!

Du erhältst diese Nachricht, weil du bei Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 teilgenommen hast.

Auch in diesem Jahr beteiligt sich Deutschland wieder am internationalen Fotowettbewerb rund um Bau- und Kulturdenkmale. Bisher wurden bereits mehr als 18.000 Bilder hochgeladen – und wir würden uns sehr über weitere Bilder von Dir freuen. Noch bis zum 30. September 2016 kannst Du Deine Bilder hochladen. Alles Wissenswerte erfährst du auf der Mitmach-Seite.

Außerdem möchten wir Dich einladen, ab 12. September 2016 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Diese sichtet und bewertet die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelt so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im Oktober tagt, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Deutschland.

Hallo Biberbaer, die Kategorien und Galerien habe ich umbenannt bzw. zum Löschen vorgeschlagen. Mit dem von Dir vorgeschlagenen Namen bin ich nicht so ganz glücklich. (Die meisten der von mir hochgeladenen Dateien haben eine langen und beschreibenden Namen. Deswegen habe ich jeweils folgenden Wunsch geäußert. Moin Molgreen, Du hast in der Tat einen ziemlichen Aufwand verursacht. Ganz oben auf der Seite wurdest Du schon einmal gebeten Deinen Dateien einen vernünftigen Namen zu geben. Warum hast Du Dich nicht danach gerichtet? Bitte halte Dich in Zukunft daran, Du vermeidest damit unnötiges Nacharbeiten. Und keine Werbung, Webseiten usw. im Namen und der Beschreibung. Otherwise they are difficult to track and it is hard to tell what the file is about without actually looking at it. I suggest you rename your image with an intuitive name that describes the file itself. Thanks, and happy editing!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Bilder vom Nuthepark

Tach, zu einigen Deiner schönen Bilder habe ich ein paar Fragen:

1. Ich habe File:20221119 xl 124000621-an-der-muendung-der-nuthe-in-die-havel.jpg absichtlich noch nicht umkategorisiert, weil man am rechten Rand teilweise den Brückenpfeiler sieht. Weil Du dasselbe Motiv in File:20221119 xl 123925349-an-der-muendung-der-nuthe-in-die-havel.jpg perfekt abgelichtet hast, stellt sich mir die Frage, ob die unperfekte Version nicht wieder (schnell-)gelöscht werden sollte. Wenn ja, wäre es am besten, wenn Du selbst in die Dateiseite ein {{SDG7}} eintragen würdest (Du kannst auch eine kurze Erläuterung einsetzen: {{SDG7|kurzer Text}}; wenn ich mich recht erinnere, wird dieser Text dann auf der gelöschten Seite angezeigt). Man kann aber sicher einen validen Behaltensgrund entsprechend zu COM:SCOPE finden, etwa als Beispiel für mögliche Fotografierfehler; ich weiß nur nicht, welche die entsprechende/-n Kategorie/-n ist/sind. 2. In Deinem ansonsten wirklich sehr schönen Bild File:20221119 xl 124150555-an-der-muendung-der-nuthe-in-die-havel.jpg empfinde ich die Krähe als zu prominent, daher störend. Hast du noch vielleicht ein zweites ähnliches Bild, dass Du nicht hochgeladen hast, das Du aber nutzen könntest, um den Bereich zu retuschieren und so die Krähe abzuschießen zu entfernen? Ohne das Geäst hätte ich es allein probiert. Den Graureiher können wir aber drin lassen. — Speravir – 01:41, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Low-Quality Bilder

Nahmd @Molgreen (meine eigene Diskussionsseite hakt gerade, darum hier), ich messe den "low-quality!-Kategorien keine besondere Bedeutung zu. Einige Deiner Bilder, die dort gelandet sind, halte ich für alles andere als "low quality". Für viel wichtiger halte ich wissenschaftliche Kategorien, in denen die Vögel nach Spezies, Genus, Familie und Ordnung sortiert werden, was ich gerade für die Küstenvögel an der Ostsee unternehme.
