Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Edgar_colle.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello, Mro!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Rir-ipv6-allocation-rate.svg and File:IPv6-as.svg edit

Hi Mro, I would like to use the two above images in the German Wikipedia article about IPv6. It is however unclear to me what exactly the diagrams depict. Does File:IPv6-as.svg show the number of (ASes with) assigned IPv6 prefixes or only the visible ones? Does File:Rir-ipv6-allocation-rate.svg only show the number of RIR assignments or is their size factored in? It would be great if you could clarify the file descriptions and maybe add references to your sources. --Ben g (talk) 13:47, 4 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello. The file Ipv6-as.svg is built with the data from http://bgp.potaroo.net/v6/as2.0/bgp-as-count.txt and http://bgp.potaroo.net/v6/as2.0/bgp-active.txt maintained by Geoff Huston (see http://bgp.potaroo.net/v6/as2.0/ and the summary on http://bgp.potaroo.net/v6/as2.0/report.txt). bgp-active represents the number of unique IPv6 prefixes in the global routing table (as measured by Geoff), while bgp-as-count.txt is the total number of AS (origin or transit). rir-ipv6-allocation-rate.svg is based on the RIR statistics published by the RIRs and that can be found under ftp.ripe.net:/pub/stats/ it counts the number of IPv6 of prefixes regardless of their size. Great, thank you. :) --Ben g (talk) 17:48, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Announced AS.svg edit

Hi Mro,

Your work File:Announced AS.svg about number of annonced as is fine, but to illustrate the exhaustion of AS numbers, I thought it would be better to see the reserved ASNs instead of the announced ASNs, so I uploaded a new file : File:Reserved AS.png.

I hope you agree with that. If not, I'm open to the discussion :-) . Best, --22:45, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Steve-Deering.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Steve-Deering.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:IPv6-as.svg edit

Hello Mro!

I've remade the IPv6-as image with updated data, but I don't know how to replace the image (or even if it is possible for me to do so?).

Cheers,

Hello. In the middle of the page, I see "import a new version of the file" in the History section, you can follow this link to upload a new version. Regards. Mro (talk) 06:41, 23 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Source of Rir-rate.svg edit

Just to mention I changed the "source" of File:Rir-rate.svg to add a link to ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ . I guessed this was your source for the data since you built the IPv6 graph using it. --Wagaf-d (talk) 15:23, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mro, as you update this diagram you seem to understand its meaning. Therefore I'm asking you to categorize it useful. The current Category:Unidentified diagrams is not useful at all! Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 12:30, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

File:NAT64.svg edit

Hello Mro,

The file NAT64.svg has an error in the IPv6 address.

The address 64:ff9b::c00:201 encapsulates an IPv4 address of the form 12.0.2.1

The IPv6 address should be 64:ff9b::c000:201.

Best regards, Guillermo

Hello. You're right of course, it's funny nobody noticed before. I can't correct it immediately but I will do it as soon as possible. Thanks. Mro (talk) 10:02, 3 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
The fixed version seem to be broken somehow - the letters are overlapping. Can you please fix it? 2A01:8C00:FF05:0:0:0:0:1A1E 11:09, 4 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
