Thanks for uploading File:Brian E. Kinsella Co-founder & CEO for Rappore.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi Yann, thank you so much for the help. It was really valuable to try to understand how it works. I thought because I found them in the public domain on articles, I could use them at first.
But I delved into them all, and found some on Pixabay. I think that’s ok right?
I’m still learning, but I am determined to figure it out, so your comments are so appreciated.
Thank you for spending the time to review, and for the help.
Best,

File:Shawn Tully.jpg edit

0x0a (talk) 16:40, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you OxOa for pointing this out. I was not aware. Am I allowed to use a photo from a YouTube source? I have been trying to read up on the copyright restrictions, but I am a little lost on the image side of things. Mwikiforce (talk) 16:47, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
In general, if you see a notice "License Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)" on a Youtube video, you can upload the video as well as its screenshots. 0x0a (talk) 16:55, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
But sometimes, a Youtube video itself may be a copyright infringement. You need to make a comprehensive judgment based on the verification status and number of subscriptions of the Youtube channel. Thanks. 0x0a (talk) 17:01, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you SO much OxOa, does that mean I can just use a screenshot that is accredited to YouTube as a channel, but that I saw on “The Week”? (Who had used it?) Mwikiforce (talk) 18:04, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you can upload just a screenshot instead of the entire video. Here's a good example you can refer to. 0x0a (talk) 18:44, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much OxOa! Much appreciated! I will try that! :-) Mwikiforce (talk) 22:51, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
oh, one more question OxOa, could I also use a photo from my subjects LinkedIN profile for example? Or if I find one publically available on other social media platforms? Thanks again! Mwikiforce (talk) 22:54, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

File copyright status edit

Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their source is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you. --0x0a (talk) 16:40, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you SO much! I also discovered, that the photo I did use was taken by the fortune photographer Mia Diehl. If I reference her, can I still use that photo that i originally found on Pixabay? :-) Mwikiforce (talk) 19:30, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mwikiforce.

You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful.

This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions.

Эlcobbola talk 20:04, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi lcobbola, my sincere apologies. I had a thread with 0x0a, who believed I could use screenshots from YouTube videos without violating anything. That that would be acceptable, and considered in the public domain. Is this not correct? Again, my apologies! Mwikiforce (talk) 20:10, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
0x0a said "In general, if you see a notice "License Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)" on a Youtube video, you can upload the video as well as its screenshots." There is no such notice on this Youtube video. Please also note that the Creative Commons Attribution license (the license applied to a copyrighted work) is entirely distinct from, and indeed mutually exclusive of, being in the public domain (a state of having no copyright). Эlcobbola talk 20:16, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah! Got it! I misunderstood that. I appreciate you elaborating. For now, I’ve taken the photo down all together, and will try to see if I can find another one. I appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me. :-) Thanks again! Mwikiforce (talk) 20:30, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Elcobbola, question for you: I took the liberty to call the photographer of the first photo I used (OxOa was so kind to dig out the contact information for that person), and she told me that my subject: “Shawn Tully” was free to do whatever he wanted with that photo. Would it be inappropriate for me to try to reach out to him directly, and ask permission - since I’m writing about him? And if I get a permission, what should I do to prove that, and do it right this time? (Don’t want to risk getting blocked). Thank you SO much for any help on this, and my apologies again for causing all of this. I find photo copyrights a little complicated still, but am working on it. All the best, Mwikiforce 2603:7000:3141:2BF7:2C45:CE2D:7518:CBE2 13:54, 4 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Elcobbola,
I found this image, which was used on The Week (not behind a paywall). It writes it’s accredited to YouTube, but would this one be legal for me to use on the article I’m writing? (I thought I’d ask you first, before downloading :-))
