Thanks for the Water Tower Photo edit

Great shot, beautiful picture.

I'd just like to check that you're aware of the CC-BY-SA license since I saw the photo with a slightly different license elsewhere. Smallbones (talk) 17:11, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes I'm aware. I'm actually slightly disappointed that Wikipedia is not going with a Creative Commons non-commercial release on photos for these contests. Use for resources like Wikipedia are great, and they offer an artist exposure, however, it would be better if photos had the protection of non-commercial use. That said, I think this is a fun competition and I'd like to be part of it, so I've offered up this photo and may throw in a few more. I understand Wikipedia will be making a calendar of select winners once everything is complete, so I'm assuming this is why the non-commercial application is not a part of uploading to the site? Maybe I'm a bit naive on that.
Thank you for your interest, your time and your feedback.
Fantastic! Send lots more photos as good as this one - you might even win multiple prizes in the Best Picture contest. If I can ask a special favor - I love "fully illustrated lists" for WikiProject NRHP. Chicago has about 20 pix to go before becoming fully illustrated, could you look to see if you have any of the missing sites? Don't worry about the US submarine in Calumet Harbor - I think it sunk.
I believe the main reason we don't use NC licenses here is that it's never really clear what exactly "Non Commercial" means, e.g. if a private university has a non-registered non-profit student club and they use some NC photos at a "bake sale" is that allowable? Just to be clear that anybody can use it, Wikipedia/Wikmedia has always made the licenses as broad as possible. Hope this helps you understand what we're intending, essentially free cultural material for everybody. Smallbones (talk) 23:24, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'll look into posting some more photos, sure. I'm not unlikely to have any of the missing NHRP places, however, as some of those are on the far south side of the city, and the city is huge.

I understand your question about NC licenses and lack of clarity regarding what is non-commercial. I think the best example is non-commercial would be an org like Wikipedia or even a blog or something that isn't an obvious money-maker. I'm not sure how a bake sale could be policed, as it is temporary and non-profit but in certain instances commercial. There's a lot of gray area, but where photographers hope to draw the line is with companies or individuals using their work in more specific ways. It wouldn't make much sense to try to stop a one-day bake sale from using a photo, but it would make sense to ask a major company to pay you for use or otherwise cease and desist use. I'm sure there are other people much better versed in explaining these things, but CC release that includes NC protection in the very least gives us a starting point from which to fight against more clearly objectionable use of work. I'd encourage wikipedia to consider this concern moving forward as it is the reason many of us protect our work as we do but still share it in instances like this.

I hope this helps. Do you use twitter?

Actually, I don't twitter. But you can email me via my user page (just click "Smallbones, and then"e-mail this user").
I'd just like to make clear that nobody here is against people making money from photography. But we also like to share our photography with others. I'm not the person to argue with about changing to an NC license - this is a big amorphous community. I think it would take a miracle to get the enite community to change their minds to go to an NC license. All the best. Smallbones (talk) 04:14, 2 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm just interested in the contest for now. I find the CC conversations tired, to be honest. Most photographers still watermark their work, but I don't do that. There's a lot of thought that goes into licensing. Everyone does what they do because that's what they're comfortable with. To each his own. I appreciate your thoughts and interest on the matter, and I don't pretend to have all the answers. I just try to get my perspective across to those that ask, because I find it important to keep the dialogue on matters open. I like to share, too, just like much of the Wikipedia community, and that's why I'm here participating! No argument here, other than I'd hope you and others would remember my thoughts in case it ever comes up in the future. I'm looking forward to posting a few more photos for the current contest. You all will have a lot of work to do sorting through all the responses. Just ticking over 8,000 submissions as day two moves on...

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2012!

Dear Nevnels,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world!

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 350,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from 36 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2012.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team
