Hello, Oknazevad!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Flag of New Jersey.svg edit

Trying to upload the SVG version with the colors you want is a pain; sometimes it takes maybe 2 or more days for the right one to show up. I'll see if I can speed it along. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:04, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey there, I just made a new version of the file with clickable Wikipedia links: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Unix_history-simple_with_links.svg But my account is too new to change the file. I saw you changed the file the last time, so maybe you can change it for me? --Flugstein

File:IW World Belt.png, File:IW Knockouts Belt.png, File:IW Tag Team Belts.png, File:IW X-Division Belt.png edit

For the record, this pics were screenshots I taken from a YouTube video so it should count as products of my own. Also these pics couldn't be found anywhere else so it counts as originals.Homey104 (talk, contribs) 18:52, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

No, on both counts. Taking a screen shot of a video is NEVER an original work. Period. Please read the information in what is acceptable. Oknazevad (talk) 00:28, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
But if I aleast give credit to the owner of the video will that be acceptable?Homey104 (talk, contribs) 20:08, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
No, because you don't have the permission of the owner to take screenshots. That's what copyright is all about: someone who makes something has the right to control who makes copies of that work, whole or in part. Without permission from the video's maker, we can't copy any of it, even just one frame from a screenshot, into articles. Sorry. Oknazevad (talk) 02:53, 14 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
