Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Category:Sicao and Category:Sicao Wetland edit

Your recent edit to Category:Sicao (diff) and Category:Sicao Wetland (diff).

This does not imply automatically that this webpage can be taken as a reference for correct names. Some people either spelled "Sicao Wetland" or some people spelled "Sihcao Wetlands", it only shows totally a chaos in Taiwan, since its pinyin can differ from person to person.

For Category:Sicao and Category:Sicao Wetland, I named it according to en:Sihcao Wetlands. Also, shouldn't the correct spelling be "Sihcao Wetlands"?--Liji (talk) 20:56, 29 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

I see. I was able to find information about "四草" by searching for it in Google, but was unable to find the correct effective spelling, because there are many different pinyin system of the word "四草" in Taiwan. Sometimes the two official information ([1], [2]) also give different pinyin for same sense of same word. --Liji (talk) 06:26, 30 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't think this has a good explanation (you said to me in here) of the difference between this concept and that of this word "四草". As far as I know, the P.R.C and the R.O.C both use different romanization systems officially, so that spellings in Pinyin and Wade-Giles are officially recognized by some official government (China or Taiwan).

In addition, often it seems that the choice of word selected by foreign authors are for reasons such as pronunciation rather than Hanyu Pinyin. For example, spelling the syllable "谷關" as "Kukuan", not "Guguan". In most of Taiwan, it would be pronounced something close to Pinyin "Gǔguān", which are commonly used as Taiwanese Mandarin in everyday language. As Pinyin is a non-phonetic language, with a completely non-standard way of the same phoneme by two types of spelling (Hanyu Pinyin and Tongyong Pinyin). In the case of English language, that's why we don't use Pinyin for naming, and even Wikipedia itself is also not allowed (see here).

Thought not! As I've said on your talk page, the only trouble now is, the general consensus on the English Wikipedia is that 四草 should be spelled "Sihcao" rather than "Sicao", therefore, does not adopt this suggestion at this time. Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. 我上個月留意到你創建「XXXX photographs of Changhua」年份類別，現在我將這些類別全數都模板化。若未來還有創建，請使用模板。此外，我將「彰化縣」與「彰化市」分開，並將彰化縣歸類在彰化縣之下（因為是縣轄市），所以你在「XXXX photographs of Changhua」類別當中可以看到「XXXX photographs of Changhua City」，這麼做的原因是為了「縣轄市」，它既是歸類於「Category:Cities in Taiwan」，也歸類於「Category:Changhua County」，它的特殊性是有別於直轄市與縣，這種事我目前還沒有用英文註解。全臺灣的縣轄市有十四個，將會依此例逐一創建。特此通知--Kai3952 (talk) 18:10, 3 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
To perform file name swaps.
When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. @Kai3952: 我認為那個是在「廟宇內」拍的照片（從正殿往大門拍），不算是「廟宇外觀」的照片。廟宇中間有天井，所以看得到天空。照你的說法，如果有人在一臺有天窗的車子內拍照，因為看得到天空，所以那張照片就不是「車子內部」的照片了嗎？「Interior of the Yinshan Temple」這個分類我解釋為「鄞山寺內部」的照片，所以我才會將這張照片放進這個分類。我將整個「鄞山寺」定義成一個建築物，在建築物內拍的照片當然可以放進來。--祥龍 (talk) 10:40, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Kai3952: 不知怎麼地，閱讀你的留言總是令我感到十分惱火。我就不是「英語系國家的維基用戶」，對於「Interior」的意義會用字典理解為「內部」，進而將「Interior of the Yinshan Temple」這個分類解釋為「鄞山寺內部」也不是什麼奇怪的事。如果我對「Interior」這個英文字詞的理解有問題，你就直接說明解釋不就好了？我的英文能力就一般般，可以寫些短句，理解不艱深的文章（在字典協助下），你還叫我去Commons:Help desk找「英語系國家的維基用戶」發問？你有考慮到我的狀態嗎？另外我並沒有要跟你爭論，只是要跟你說我是基於怎樣的因素做出此一編輯，並對「看得見天空就不是在室內」這句話提出質疑，因為你宣稱這是「常識」。但顯然這句話顯然在「中文」中是有誤的，因為在房間裡也可從牆上的窗戶也可以看到藍天。在英文中的情況我就不多做表示了。

我有再去研究一下，發現我可能太過篤定。因為File:淡水鄞山寺.jpg顯示的畫面是「藍天下的中庭」，但是中庭分類在Interior architectural elements，而且再上一層的類別就是Building interiors，我應該先去問人才對，我真的對不起您。我向來的分類作法是：

假如鄞山寺不止有正殿，還有偏殿、後殿、左廂房、右廂房，那麼我會將「Interior of the Yinshan Temple」改成「Interiors of the Yinshan Temple」。目前因為照片量不足，無法確定未來是不是有偏殿、後殿的室內照片，所以現在暫時用Category:Interior of the Yinshan Temple囊括鄞山寺所有建築物的室內。
當我看見這以下四張照片時，我會將3.4.分類在Interior；至於1.2.，我會再問人。

依照過去我與那些英語系國家的用戶在對談，他們想法恐怕不會像你如此在乎這種事，因為他們認為一切做的事只要是對commons有幫助，在不影響他們對commons貢獻這個大原則下，是不會去在意你說的，更不用說他們懂得去釐清金門、馬祖算是中華民國而不算臺灣。
基本上，我也認同他們的想法，在不影響編輯及分類的工作之下，只要是對commons有幫助，其實我不會去在意你說的這些，更不用說要討論「金門、馬祖也是直屬於中華民國而非臺灣」此等個人發表的政治觀點。

我忘了對你說。我還是會看情況，有些分類是必須要用「Republic of China」命名，例如：Category:District Courts (Republic of China)，法院本身是中華民國，但在政府機關的體制上是算中華民國，換成是法院建築（臺灣某某地方法院）是算臺灣，此種情況下必須要有彈性調整，所以才會放在臺灣（Category:Courts of Taiwan），臺灣之上的分類是中華民國（Category:Courts of the Republic of China）。否則，在大多數情況下，我是以「Taiwan」命名為優先選擇，主要原因是方便調整分類，既可歸類在Category:Republic of China又可歸類在Category:China。如果你對我這麼做不滿意，建議你還是向Commons:Categories for discussion/2019/09/Category:Taiwan說說看，即便你用中文而不是用英文，總比什麼都沒說好多吧。--Kai3952 (talk) 09:22, 3 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

我很感謝Reke可以帶領你看清我們在分類上所遭遇什麼難題的整個處境，但他說的只是淺淺，難度真的不是單純只有英文語境或是國際對Taiwan的認知這方面的問題，不過我還是願意去處理這問題。因為我當初有跟你說過，本以為是我說太多才使你看不懂，原來你是看懂，只是你只願意接受Reke說法。既燃你看懂，卻還離題，要我看影片，當時跟你說去找社群討論，你也不要。你對Reke說的話，無論你是控訴還是抱怨，我來只要想告訴你二件事：

所謂避免衝突，一般人認知是用表現，而不會明著說；可是你相反，你用這種告示說給大家看，然後你還是找我談金門。如果你覺得你的告示不是向我宣戰，你可以找別人問，看他們感受會不會認為這是挑釁行為。但你不用想太多，我沒叫你不要來找我，只是你沒辦法聚焦在「負責」，所以你才會一直拿我當理由，說我曲解你。無論你這是在控訴還是抱怨，真的對你所說分類問題是沒有幫助。

當初會有這個構想，一來因為「歷史建築」是由中華民國政府所公告認定的文化資產，不是單純的老建築就可以放在分類。而金門馬祖是否屬於「臺灣」則有爭議，事實上也有人是認為臺灣獨立的話要放棄金馬。

不過你的這段文字還可以說只是單純猜測並非刻意扭曲。

我看到你在臺灣鐵道史是寫「臺北停車場」，後來被223.136.122.90改成「臺中停車場」，然而我仔細看Wildcursive上傳的這張照片，他是寫「臺北停車場」，因此我感到混亂，不知道是臺中、臺北哪一個才對？如果要我自己從照片上去看，老實說，我對歷史照片這方面的考察不是很懂，深怕看錯了，所以我認為還是要找你問問看，畢竟臺灣鐵道史這條目你寫得很豐富，想必是有做過這方面的功課，找你問應該比較可信--Kai3952 (talk) 11:20, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

之前我建立Category:Temples in Taiwan by year of completion，當中發現建廟年份最早的是「1579年」，這間廟剛好是你在中文維基所寫八份姑媽宮條目，然而對照澎湖天后宮，其建廟年份是「1604年」。由於我只是負責整理，對於台灣建廟史甚是不熟，所以你姑且充當我這個問題只是在閒聊。

按照大家普遍的認知來看，漢人移民來台的發展史是從中國大陸到澎湖，然後澎湖接著是台灣，所以澎湖的建廟史應該是會比台灣更早，如果是這樣，那麼八份姑媽宮出現1579年，馬上就有問題，為什麼會比澎湖天后宮更早呢？--Kai3952 (talk) 13:27, 23 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

1604年不是澎湖天后宮的建廟年代，是「在文獻可考的最早年代」，所以信息框那邊的標註其實有誤。意思是說在1604年已經確定澎湖上面有天后宮了，天后宮的建廟年代在更早之前，但目前已不可考。所以兩邊其實無法比較，因為根本不曉得澎湖天后宮是什麼時候有的。另外八份姑媽宮的1579年創建說法，也只是廟方自己在沿革碑上的宣稱，只能說有這個說法，但準不準確是另一回事。臺灣有些廟宇的創廟年代，會比清代方志上面的年代還要早，有些說法是說文獻是等到廟宇已經有一定規模，或是要建成磚木建築的時候才會被記載下來，但其實在更早之前就有簡單草寮搭建成的小廟之類的。--祥龍 (talk) 11:41, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

由於創建「新竹州廳」此條目的原作者Vegafish很久沒來維基，只好找最近編輯的人詢問，因此我找你。話說我好像最近常常找你，很抱歉。如果按照條目紀載，新竹市政府是位於新竹州廳，而且將政府辦公機能仍持續沿用著，那麼我就困惑了，因為這應該要添加zh:Category:新竹市政府，可是卻沒有添加，所以新竹州廳目前是不是新竹市政府所在地，還是說這只是古蹟，新竹市政府不在這辦公？這個問題的答案是會影響到我在commons分類，如果答案是，我就會比照添加，反之若否，我就會維持原狀，所以求解--Kai3952 (talk) 09:14, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Greetings from Wiki Loves Folklore International Team!

Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, such as folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology, and many more.

The campaign invites participants to document photographs, videos, and audios linked to folk culture and fit within the contest's theme. Through this campaign, you may become a part of a community dedicated to preserving our intangible culture, which has been brought and passed down for thousands of years.

How to Contribute?

The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February to 31 March 2023. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. It’s simple: grab a camera, record an image, video or audio under the folklore theme and start uploading ! To learn more about the rules, check out our Project page on Wikimedia Common. Here are the exciting prizes which you can win internationally.

我看到Category:District highways in Tainan與其他分類不同，後來我看你寫「依照公路法英文版進行修改」，所以我想請問公路法真的只有針對台南才命名District highways in Tainan嗎？如果不是，我認為分類應該統一為佳，因為台南位在台灣，而且區道也並非是台南獨有，命名不同只會帶給使用者困擾。如果你不反對，我打算將分類的命名與台灣各地一致。--125.230.90.78 06:39, 23 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
