Thank you for providing images to the commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

• Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
• State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly.
• If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
• Add a Copyright tag - images without a appropriate license tag will be deleted.
• Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate Categories, so it can be found by others.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. Thumbnails

Please don't upload thumbnails of images that are already here! I just deleted Image:400px-Shanghai_jade_buddha_temple.JPG, since it is a thumbnail of Image:Shanghai_jade_buddha_temple.JPG. Please copy all information from original image (author, uploader (if not the same), description) when you move it to Commons from other Wiki.

Please add your images to appropriative pages and/or categories where other users could easily find them. For example to Category:Beijing.

License and information

Is there any way to make you understand that you need to add sources and copyright tags for everything you upload? Do you realise that images without this crucial information may be deleted? Do you realise that you wasting your time making contributions that will be deleted? Please start adding copyright tags and background information to everything you upload. Shenzhen

Can you explain the copyright status for Image:Shenzen.jpg. You appear to have first uploaded it as a copy of the image for the En-Wikipedia. But when that image and the Commons version were tagged as unsourced, you then changed its status to {GFDL-self}. Can you confirm that you did in fact take this photograph yourself. -- Solipsist 22:38, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

False information

You apparently know nothing about copyright tags. You tagged Image:800px-PICT2411.jpg as GFDL although Adam Carr has explicitly released the photo to the public domain. You are also uploading fair use images from English Wikipedia as GFDL, although this is clearly in breach of WikiCommons rules.

Regarding Image:India.Mumbai.03.jpg, you uploaded this photo from English Wikipedia en:Image:India.Mumbai.03.jpg and the copyright is owned by a photo agency in Brazil. Despite this, you tagged the photo as "GFDL-self", which is both false and a copyright violation.

Also, very few of your uploads have a source, which means that they may be deleted for having incomplete information.

Thanks for uploading Image:Opiumwar.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Your account will be renamed

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Pryku. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Pryku~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
