Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Identification/Categorization help request

Yukon Highway

Please see File:Freighting on Yukon Highway near Goldstream-cropped.jpg and [4]. From the placenames these are in the mining country NE of Fairbanks. But what stretch of road actually constituted the "Yukon Highway"? Is there a citeable source? Thanks, Dankarl (talk) 21:54, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

See also item 7a in the same series at [5] mentions Gilmore (thought I'd linked directly, should have tested). My guess is a predecessor to the southern part of the Dalton Highway, or the Steese highway before it was named for Steese. The Yukon of the name would be the river, not the territory. From the 1928 Governor's report, the itinerary of the trip was:

Fairbanks, Nenana, McGrath, Ophir Tacotna, Unalakleet, Golovin, Nome, Teller, Candle, Kotzebue, Nulato, Ruby, Tanana, Bettles, Wiseman, Fort Yukon, Circle Hot Springs, Tolovana, Fairbanks, June 7-16 with 2 days in Nome. p 13

The whole (approximately 1920s) volume of reports does not contain the term "Yukon Highway" despite tabulations of highway work includinng locations. In 1928, if I read things right, the Steese was newly completed (as a wagon road) but not yet named. Dankarl (talk) 02:25, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

The Governor's Report for 1929, p. 24:

"The road from Chatanika to Circle was continued on the 3 year program to open for through traffic The preliminary grading was completed and portions surfaced As a result of the improvement there was a considerable amount of traffic over this route toward the close of the season During the 1929 season travel began over this route in June

The road from Fairbanks the northern terminus of the Richardson Highway to Circle on the Yukon River was named the Steese Highway in honor of Maj James G Steese former president of this commission under whose direction this project was planned and almost entirely constructed"

North Pole City

I found a business of that name in Oklahoma City, couldn't match any photos however. Pretty clearly not in North Pole, Alaska. Commercial spam. If it were adequately describes and in Alaska I'd let 1 or 2 stand on Commons under Shops in Alaska but mis-catagorized and with no real description I'd support a mass deletion. BTW I have only internet resources for this kind of job. I'm a midwesterner who has visited Alaska several times, but not a resident. Dankarl (talk) 02:24, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

More on Alaska organization

Well, I got the Aerial photos dispersed by region, but I thought we needed a parallel category for cities etc and started on Category:Aerial photographs of cities in Alaska. The first thing I found is you can't fit such a category into the existing aerial photographs of cities category tree which jumps from international level to by city. I guess you are just supposed to use the by-country and by-state categories for anything that doesn't warrant its own category. There does not seem to be any particular provision for aerial photographs of towns, villages, settlements, but I think those have a different audience than aerial photographs of natural features. Which brought your suggestion of flattening the places hierarchy back to mind. I wouldn't use Places as the top level as it doesn't make it clear we're talking about human habitation. Populated place, I think, has a more specialized meaning, perhaps comparable to Census-designated Place tho I'm not clear on that. Inhabited places? Cities, towns, and villages? I propose two high-level categories: Category:Geographic divisions of Alaska (to include Boroughs and Census Areas), and Category:Populated Places in Alaska (to include Cities, Villages, Census-Designated Places, Formerly populated places, and Seasonally populated places). The last named goes beyond the Commons scheme but is more relevant in Alaska than elsewhere. The high-level categories would be subcats of both Alaska and Geography of Alaska, and the Geographic Divisions category would have a seealso to Regions of Alaska. We could drop Category:Aerial photographs of Cities in Alaska and do Aerial photographs of Populated Places in Alaska.Dankarl (talk) 00:39, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm going to skip the geographic divisions category for now and put boroughs and census areas into populated places. Category:Populated Places in the United States includes boroughs, so there is a modicum of precedent, though usually in those cases a borough is urban or suburban, not a county-equivalent. Single Perfunctory Parent Category?

Thank you for your insight. Since I have picked up what I can from looking at 'Wikimedia Commons structure' and noted that there are no obvious guidelines or style sheet to build structure within 'Categories', if you could give me some examples of an alternative structure while creating Categories I think I would better understand what I am doing wrong. wondering what to do for Washington voter pamphlets

Washington has archived voter pamphlets going back to 1914. Now according to the privacy policy for the SOS website "This is a public domain web site. It is governed by the Public Disclosure Act (RCW 42.56.040-130) which makes this information, and any information you submit to this site, freely available for public inspection and copying." So from my interpretation it's released into the public domain. Do you think this is enough of a release to upload the more recent ones? MB298 (talk) 22:07, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Films shot in Alaska

I noticed we had The Chechahcos on the mainpage with the claim it was the first full-length film shot in Alaska. It had no Alaska categories and there seems to be no Films shot in Alaska category on Commons. I'm not at all knowledgible of film; would there be enough to make a category worthwhile? There is such a category on WP, which incidentally does not include The Chechahcos. I added :Category:1924 in Alaska. Hi. I see you have provided many photos of Alaska so I am making an assumption that you live there. Should this be true, I was wondering if you could provide a photo of Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral in Anchorage? There are several Wikipedia pages that could use such a photo. Response to deletion nomination

On Oct. 9, you nominated my photo of Rosita Worl for deletion. Your note suggests the rights are to Ed Schoenfeld and/or CoastAlaska. I am Ed Schoenfeld, retired from CoastAlaska, and retain the rights to my own photos. But it's not a "personal photo" in Wikipedia terms because it was used professionally, on at least six websites, within the context of at least two articles. I'm new to this and perhaps missed a place in the photo form to better explain this. I'd appreciate you removing that nomination request. I apologize for responding here. Flickr2Commons

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. "Births in" categories

You've piqued my curiosity. Where was the discussion for this deprecation? Not sure what Wikipedia has to do with anything, though. You seem to suggest that, because no "People of" category exists, then there's no reason for...any related categories to exist? I don't follow this logic. — Huntster (t @ c) 06:24, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

@Huntster: Last I recall, Commons is a separate website bound by its own conventions. Every time I turn around, however, users from Wikidata and Wikipedia appear to feel otherwise. The short answer to your query can be found in the lead section of COM:CAT: "It is essential that every file can be found by browsing the category structure. To allow this, each file must be put into a category directly. Each category should itself be in more general categories, forming a hierarchical structure." This categorization effort was created by users from Wikidata to serve purposes relating more to Wikidata than to this site. Basically, they used the categorization function to superimpose a set of categories which aren't an integrated part of the existing hierarchy and weren't intended to be. "People of" categories are widespread at the county level. On the community level, however, they've been created when an actual need exists for them. The reference to Wikipedia has to do with their notion of a "consistent categorization scheme" as a pretense to creating levels upon levels of barely-there categories. COM:CAT suggests keeping things as simple as possible. While it would make sense to simply create those redlinked categories, there's little to no effort being made to categorize people according to any places except their birthplaces, even when their birthplace is completely irrelevant to their fame/notability/other reasons why they would even have a category. Without a sincere attempt to fix that, creating those categories solely to prop up the hierarchy has the downside of unnecessarily pushing content further down the tree. As for discussion, that should have occurred when these Wikidata editors showed up to create this mess. I'm simply trying to clean up a glaring hole in the hierarchy which has existed as such for at least two or three years.RadioKAOS (talk) 08:06, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

So you've taken it upon yourself, without discussion, to undo a massive number of categories. Based on a personal interpretation of COM:CAT that I see no evidence of being commonly accepted. You need to bring this to Commons:Village pump and find consensus before making such sweeping changes. I'll be completely honest: I don't particularly care whether these categories ultimately stay or go; while I do think they are net beneficial, I have no particular horse in this race. Hi. I was out on vacation and couldn't loop back on the village pump topic. I'm adding {{Check categories}} to the categories they've created and they've touched last. They're now all listed in Category:Media needing category review - No timestamp given. If you find some time, your help would be greatly appreciated to clean up this mess. Thanks. OK wow, slap in the editing face LOL. Now that I can see what I have created I will concentrate on also cleaning up my mess. Some should be ok though. I see where I was just using the uploaders names instead of translating them to English. Thanks for being so helpful. Sitka Science Center

Trying to work out whether you are coming from knowing more than me or less than me about the Sitka Science Center with this edit of yours (and also [https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Sitka_Sound_Science_Center&diff=796287797&oldid=772254517 this). I was under the impression that only this particular building, the former Sage Memorial Building, was ever part of Sheldon Jackson College, and that the other building of the Sitka Science Center was newer and purpose-built. What you did with the category doesn't work with that. Am I wrong, or were you shooting in the dark? - Jmabel ! talk 02:38, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
