You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

English: G'day Reader85, You recently uploaded File:Nagradigosukrmedal 008 ukr.jpg the categories you used (Awards by country and Military decorations) are high level categories designed only to hold other categories. Could you please categorise it more specifically and add a file description to the description template? Wiki policy is for categorisation of files and articles to be diffused as low as possible. Orders, decorations and medals on Wikimedia Commons are usually categorised under one of the following categories 'Orders of X', 'Military decorations of X', Civil decorations of X' or 'Ribbon bars of X' where X is the applicable country name (eg 'Category:Orders of Ukraine'). Occasionally, depending upon the level of effort that has been applied to categorising for a particular country, there may be sub-categories for different orders, etc, in which case, if applicable a file should be categorised under the appropriate sub-category. Ribbon bars always go under the 'Ribbon bars of X' category and if there is a sub-category for the particular order, decoration or medal, they may also get listed under that sub-category. The term decorations is used somewhat loosely - it includes medals for long service, campaign service, commeoration of significant events, etc - the only limitation in this regard is that excludes orders which have their own category and non-state awards. In a worst case scenario, if categorisation as an order, military decoration or civil decoration is unknown, but the country is known, the image may be categorised on Commons as 'Awards of X' - this will assist in allowing other editors who may have a better idea to identify it and recategorise to the appropriate category.

English: Disregard the request to recategorise and add a description, I have found the necessary information and have fixed this already. If you are adding new images for orders, decorations, medals and ribbons, please keep the categorisation principles in mind.

Вітаю! спробував оновити зображення, бо на оригіналі забагато лишнього білого фону, і при використанні у якості шаблону для медалі виходить не гарний вигляд, але коли оновив, то чомусь моє зображення відображюється видовженим :( Підскажи що зробити або допоможи. Добрий день! Мабуть погано спрацював кеш (cache), у таких випадках допомагають т.зв. "Null edits" - декілька разів увійти у режим редагування сторінки та зберегти нічого не змінюючи. Див.також [1].
