Files from Facebook and licenses.

Hi Sefer azeri,

I found that some of your files were originally uploaded on Facebook (File:Sevrec porcelain plate in the National Art Museum of Azerbaijan.jpg and File:Albert Nicolas Roosenboom - Winter landscape.jpg). Did you take these photographs yourself as indicated in the source field? If so could you explain why they were first uploaded to Facebook.

Another issue that I see at a lot of your files is that they are indicated as own work but are clearly pictures of copyrighted objects. Template:Art photo likely fits better for your uploads, it gives room to state both the permission for the photo and the art work. Basvb (talk) 17:42, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!

Dear Sefer azeri,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

@LouisAragon: the same issue obviously continues. Not only this user is changing existing proper descriptions, but also uploading material from museums and attributing forgeries (check it from my move log). His most common modus operandi is to find artwork with official museum description like Azerbaïdjan (région) / Iran nord occidental (=nord-ouest) in Louvre, implying Iranian Azerbaijan i.e. nortwestern Iran, and then to claim it's from contemporary Republic of Azerbaijan. Artworks from Shiraz, Iraq and Afghanistan are also affected (see this, this and this). There are many more files that need to be checked and corrected. He also tends to play with dating, for example museum source says 11-13th century, and he cherry-picks 10th to fit for particular Arran dynasty. Honestly, I feel aggression against me and my country in the minds of both of you, and I do not understand why. However, I would like to assure you that, like you, I try to enrich Wikipedia as I find time for my work. I recently returned from a trip to Istanbul, and I'm trying to edit many of the photos I've taken in museums and upload them to Wikipedia. Only a part of the photos I uploaded is related to Azerbaijan, so I do not consider your opinion, to put it mildly, fair.

As for your views on the Republic of Azerbaijan (Northern Azerbaijan) and Iranian Azerbaijan (Southern Azerbaijan), until the 19th century, these two regions were culturally and historically united. Like South Azerbaijan, the territories where the Republic of Azerbaijan is now located are under the influence of Iranian culture, and therefore it is impossible to discuss any cultural event up to the 19th century without taking it out of context. Until the end of the 19th century, in the northern palaces, all poets continued to write in Persian, the same carpets were woven in both the north and the south, the same songs were heard, and the same dances were performed. Therefore, it is almost impossible to determine whether this or that historical artifact belongs to the northern or southern part of Azerbaijan without knowing the exact city of production. In fact, it makes no sense, as I said, until the 19th century, both parts of Azerbaijan continued to be under the rule of one state (dynasty), and regardless of where it was created, the place of production is Azerbaijan. For example, look at the history of the historical artifact from Mosul, which you link above. The work was created in the 12th century in Mosul - on the territory of the Atabes of Azerbaijan. The Atabeys were a dynasty of Turkic origin, both capitals were located in Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan and Tabriz), Mosul, where the work was produced, has been a predominantly Turkish city for centuries, and today Turkomans living in Mosul speak a dialect of the Azerbaijani language. Now, tell me, how right is it to discuss this work outside the context of Azerbaijani culture?

The diffs are there for eveyone to see. You are evidently on a campaign to import Soviet/Aliyev-funded historical negationism into this project, which is not allowed.[8] We've got numerous diffs where you are literally changing content into "Azerbaijani" even though the sources provided by the museums clearly call it something else. And FYI, the initial warning posted on your talk page is already pretty old, yet even after that you still continued making the same sort of disruptive edits. Now please do tell me again, how are you supposedly here to build this project when we've got these diffs laying here? Look, both me and LouisAragon can't buy such stories, we're not charlatans for Oriental art and general history. It's quite easy to distinguish artistic origins because until 20th century Azerbaijan implied only northwestern Iran, while area of today's Republic of Azerbaijan was called Arran. Museum sources clearly make such distinction, even offering proper contemporary explanations (like northwestern Iran vs. Caucasian Azerbaijan).

Yes, both areas were united, under various Iranian dynasties, so it's actually hard to discuss about any pre-19th-century art in today's Republic of Azerbaijan outside of the context of Iranian culture. Such art is classified as Iranian aka Persian, including Eldiguzid art. No one in the world claims it's "ethnic" Azerbaijani or "ethnic" Turkic art. Such types of arts don't exist. In the same way, Mosul carpets are traditionally classified as Turkish (because of Ottoman rule), and synonym for a hammam is Turkish bath. It doesn't matter was Mosul carpet woven by Arab or Kurd, or particular hammam was built by Persian or Pashtun, because I'll repeat - labels like Iranian/Persian or Turkish aren't of ethnic nature.

For me, it's quite clear that you would like to construct an ethnic art, based on tendentious interpretation of history, anachronisms and pure forgeries. Particularly bizarre is your appeal on dynastic origins, you're implying that Eldiguzids were sort of self-aware proud Azeri or Turkic? Or Safavids and Qajars? The former were invoking ancient Arab origins because of religious reasons, rather than Persian or Turkic, and the latter were even claiming Arsacid Parthian ancestry. Not because they were sort of proud Iranians, it was actually fashionable in that times to invent "glorious" ancestry (like Sarmatism in Europe) only for purpose of distancing royalty from peasants, i.e. Persians, Azeris and others. Not to mention all of dynasties, from Achaemenids to Ottomans, intermarried with various ethnicities because no one ever cared about it.

So no, we don't classify art based on ethnic origins, or nation-building artificially constructed ethnic origins. We don't call Hellenistic art as such because of specific Greek DNA, but because of artistic influences. We don't call 20th-century British art as "German" or "Germanic" because Windsors are originally German. If some Greek or pan-Germanic advocate is "proud" of it, that's their own problem. If some Turk feels proud of Turkish baths or Persian ethnonationalist feels proud of Persian art, it's also their problem. I adore all their countries and art produced there, but IMHO all such cases are equally ridiculous. Personally I don't share my earnings with the closest members of my family, and I know few distinguished scientists and professors whose children are total disaster. And you think that you share something or someone will have higher opinion of you or your desired collective (tribe, nation, etc.) if some artist in distant history and distant areas produced a fine piece of artwork? It would be foolish to claim that a nation formed in the 15th century created something in the 12th century or earlier. However, this does not mean that there was no culture in Azerbaijan before the 15th century. Sorry to disappoint you, but LouisAragon's comment ain't the view of "Armenian and Iranian historians" but of worldwide scholarship. I came from a region with many analogies, for example you can see that "Croatian language is the standardized variety of the Serbo-Croatian pluricentric language" which is a fact accepted by worldwide scholarship and used in virtually all Wikipedias. Except one, Croatian Wikipedia, where they claim that their language is completely distinctive from Serbian and that Serbo-Croatian is a form of "linguistic genocide" (LOL). Croatian POV about their language and Azerbaijani POV of their history is actually being ridiculed worldwide, and many people in those two countries found hard to accept that their view is incorrect.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean we'll tolerate anti-Azerbaijani crap here. I personally reverted one Azerbaijani user who was making such mistakes, and I explained him why. Obviously he don't know about that subject, but I do. There have been also claims on Wikipedias that all Caucasian carpets are actually "Armenian" on the basis that they're older people. It's also a total BS and won't be tolerated. Anyway, who cares how old ethnicities are, Greeks are older than Swedes but no one has higher opinion about their country because of it. Sentinelese may be the oldest people, a big "wow" for them. :)

Regarding your question, precisely yesterday I was giving an advice to fellow editor: if there's some 18th-centry carpet from Mosul, city of Arab Iraq with many Kurds, it uses Persian knot and artist's name sounds very Armenian, just put it under Anatolian (aka Turkish) where it indeed should be. You see, art history scholarship can also be pro-Turkish, anti-Arab, anti-Kurdish, anti-Persian and anti-Armenian in the same time. The same goes for modern examples like Iranian filmmakers in France. It's French cinema, not Iranian. Plain and simple.

And I'll repeat for the end: I don't have any issue with claims of Republic of Azerbaijan present on Azerbaijani Wikipedia, as long as it does not affect outside projects like Commons and Wikidata. Here I identified and organized thousands of Safavid and Qajar buildings and artworks, and if inside your or someone else's mind it's "Azerbaijani" I'm fine with it. The same goes for any "proud" other irrelevant individual. If you're personally concerned about statements by historians above, I'll help you little more to develop your thinking: it's an indisputable fact that there's indeed a modern, basically artificially constructed nation, which bears a name which starts with A. Their name originate from other language, officially used by other older nation, and even their national language is literally taken from yet other older nation. They live on land de facto occupied from other older peoples who lived there for centuries, and still exist today. A nation with no ancient, nor even medieval history, and worldwide scholarship agree it is true. Funny, isn't it? :) Yeah, they do have a sort of national culture, but their culture is actually mixture of other national cultures. Origin of all of their artists, without a singe exception, can be traced to other older nations. Still no laughing? There's more! Recently they lost a war against a smaller mountain nation whose name also starts with A. :)))
