File:Caltex logo.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi SixFourThree. Are you claiming this file as your "own work"? That seems unlikely, and not in accordance with how you licensed local Wikipedia file en:File:NYC Councilmanic Flag.png. You should update this file's license accordingly as well; otherwsie, it's likely to get nominated for deletion at some point in time. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:50, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
- It seems like you've also licensed File:MilwaukeeSchnitts caplogo.png as "own work". For reference, "own work" does not mean downloading the file from a website and then subsequently uploading it to Commons; it means that you are the creator of the logo from the very start. I other words, it was your original idea/inspiration and your original effort that created the logo, not someone else's. If you're simply choosing "own work" by default because you don't know which license to use, then look at COM:CT for some examples of copyright tags considered OK for Commons. You can also always ask at COM:VP/C for help as well. Licensing everything as "own work" when it's not does not mean files will automatically be deleted, but it does create unnecessary clean up which can be avoided. It also will give others the impression that your knowledge of COM:L, etc. is sketchy at best which may lead them to be less willing to assume good faith when issues arise with you uploads. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:57, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
- I created these particular images from scratch. I did not download them from a website. I have seen "own work" consistently applied to such images, but will re-label if that is preferable. Thank you for the correction. SixFourThree (talk)SixFourThree
- If they're your own work then fine, but you seem to be stating they are official flags and logos of some kind. If you're basing these on someone else's work, then there may two copyrights which need to be considered: the one for your derivative and the one for the work you're basing it on. If the work you're basing it on is still protected by copyright, then you can claim the derivative as your own, but not really the original work. In the case of the flag, you probably need to at least better clarify where the center seal/image comes from (maybe like is done with File:Flag of the Mayor of New York City.svg); in the case of the logo, it is probably too simple for copyright protect per COM:TOO#United States and should be {{PD-textlogo}} instead. The logo might be somehting which can be en:trademarked, but that's not necessarily the same as protected by copyright. It would also help to see something official showing the cap logo, so it's not mistaken for something you just decided to create on your own. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:00, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion edit
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
