Tulane University edit

Hi. Thanks for your great contributions to Louisiana topics. I don't understand some of your recent edits to Tulane University related photos however. You have been removing more specific subcategories to put things into the general Category:Tulane University. It looks to me like that category is overpopulated, and would benefit from more subcategorization, rather than lumping everything with anything to do with Tulane together. What were you trying to do? Thanks. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:36, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Infrogmation, I appreciate you thanking me for my contributions and for reaching out to me. I've noticed your contributions in New Orleans and Louisiana in general and think it's great. You must stay busy with all the photos you take. Louisiana has so much to offer and Wikipedia really could have more notable Louisiana articles and photos to truly capture everything it has to offer. Regarding Tulane, I agree with you about more subcategorization and I was actually doing that. I did remove photos of Chris Paul and a powderpuff football game from Category:Tulane athletics, but I moved probably 3x's more photos from Category:Tulane University to Category:Tulane athletics. The Tulane Publications Dept, added many photos to the athletics category that have nothing to do with Tulane athletics. I also found many Tulane athletics photos in the Category:Tulane University. For example, I moved many photos of Tulane fans, coaches, players and facilities for baseball, volleyball, men's basketball and football into the appropriate subcategory in Category:Tulane athletics. There are probably close to 200 additional photos of football that I will be moving to Category:Tulane Green Wave football from Category:Tulane University and Category:Tulane Homecoming. I would also like to again remove the Chris Paul and powderpuff football game photos from Category:Tulane athletics since they have no association with the Tulane athletic dept, but I will wait for your response. If I did a poor job and was unclear in my reply to you, please let me know and I'll be happy to do a better job with my follow up reply. Spatms (talk) 3:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello!

Thank you for uploading File:LSUcannons crop.jpg to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. In the future, please consider using CommonsHelper, a tool which automates the process of moving files over. Thank you,

Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. jdx Re: 03:36, 25 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion: CropTool for your uploads? edit

Hi, thanks for your work with LSU football player photos. Have you considered using Commons:CropTool since your recent uploads have been crops of existing Commons photos? It's easy to use, especially because it automatically loads the source and license info from the original image, and links to the picture you cropped from.

I bring this up because I noticed you're sourcing photos to either "Wikimedia Commons" with no wikilink or incorrect Flickr source, neither of which is helpful to other users who need to verify the source info or looking to find the original image. Using CropTool will also help you avoid messages like the one above. Let me know if you have questions, but in the meantime, please make sure you enter useful, correct source info for your uploads. Thanks! Ytoyoda (talk) 15:16, 31 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, wanted to reiterate my recommendation for using CropTool - the auto-populated information fields make it easier for other users to find the photographs you cropped from, and helps you avoid errors like the one you made here, where you linked to an unrelated Flickr image. Please give the tool a shot, thanks! Ytoyoda (talk) 18:06, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

We need your feedback! edit

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

College athletic programs in the United States by team has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Category:Missouri Tigers football seasons vs. Category:Missouri Tigers football by year edit

Hello, I saw you change it to Category:Missouri Tigers football seasons from Category:Missouri Tigers football by year. I believe the standard on Wikimedia Commons is the latter, if you go to any other college football team page. --Engineerchange (talk) 14:28, 3 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I've seen both, but I'm good with whatever the standard is. Schools like USC, Michigan and Arkansas use season and others use by year. I'm good either way, but I appreciate you pointing that out to me.

When you want to delete an unuseful empty category... edit

... it is a lot better if you marked it with {{SD|C2}} rather than blanking it. That would call it to admins' attention. I happen to be looking through parentless categories, so I noticed, but there are thousands of parentless categories and most need to be fixed rather than deleted, so it can take a while for one of those to be noticed as empty. - Jmabel ! talk 04:08, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jmabel, that is excellent information and appreciate you sending it. I will keep it on here, so I can reference it in the future. Spatms (talk) 04:36, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
An update to that: if the category name is a likely search term, it may be better to turn it into a category redirect, like I've done with Category:Auburn Tigers. Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 01:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, I can't redirect. Maybe because not an admin? Could you please redirect Category:Detroit Mercy Titans? Spatms (talk) 02:00, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Renamings edit

Hi. Thanks for your work. Just a comment: I'm not sure why you seem fond of asking for parenthetical expressions be added in file renaming requests - there were a couple where the word "Louisiana" was already in the title, so adding (LA) would not only be dubious but redundant. I'd tend to avoid parenthetical additives where it can be clear without them. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:39, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I saw some were approved without the parenthetical expression and I believe I prefer that. Many high schools already had the parenthetical expression, so I just went with that format for consistency. Now that I've seen the format you discussed, I will continue with that format. Please feel free to change the files that have the parenthetical expression and Louisiana to include only the state name. Spatms (talk) 03:47, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • A suggestion: When you decide to go to the trouble of requesting a file be renamed, the new better name does not need to retain unhelpful garbage numbers in the file name eg [1]. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:57, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good to hear from you, Infrogmation. You bring excellent news. I've always wanted to get rid of those numbers but was worried I would break a copyright rule or something to that effect, so I would request to change as little as possible. I did see you change them occasionally, but I figured as an admin you had the ability to make those changes or you at least knew the rules better. Thanks for reaching out to explain this. Take care. Spatms (talk) 07:26, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

"Format" edit

Hi. 1) I suggest you stop describing edits to remove categories "Format". 2) If for example you don't see the usefulness of "Category:History of Saint Charles Parish, Louisiana" on File:BonnetCarreSpillwayOpening1973.jpg, note that it shows a significant historical event in the location. We seem to be gradually creating decade (and when there's enough material year) categories for counties and parishes - until such is created for Saint Charles Parish, "history of" seems most relevant. Thanks for your attention. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:58, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello Infrogmation, I like that we focus on Louisiana and Southern Louisiana in particular because the entire state needs help. I also understand how you can feel that I'm encroaching on what you consider your domain on WikiMedia Commons. I'm very mindful of this and try to avoid ever touching any of your work (I truly do). I would like to add that your complaint about the descriptions is a bit much and the threatening tone is also a bit much, but I know I'm working in an area that you feel is home and people like spaces to themselves. Over the many years we have both shared the same area on this platform, I haven't criticized your work and only make changes if it matches other parishes, states, regions, etc... I'm not trying to make it personal and I'm only trying to bring Louisiana up to the standards that other states currently have. I prefer to not have disagreements, so I try to avoid criticizing others even if I don't 100% agree with their edits.
All that being said, categorizing is what I'm good at and I like to standardize the categories across the counties/parishes, just like the other states in the U.S. Louisiana lags behind other states in most categories and what I'm doing matches other areas, plus the categories I'm developing fit wiki guidelines because they've already been invented. Regarding the Bonne Carre Spillway, I do see the usefulness of the File:BonnetCarreSpillwayOpening1973.jpg on the "History of Saint Charles Parish, Louisiana", and I do note that it shows a significant historical event in the location. That is why I moved the entire spillway under that category. This specific location has played a huge role in history even before the Europeans arrived. There is more to the history of this location than the 1973 Mississippi River Flood. I know the history of the area and why the Bonne Carre is located in its location (multiple crevasses in the same location). I know it was built because of the 1927 flood and 1973 was significant because the Old Man River Structure was almost destroyed, and Morgan City would be New Orleans now. By moving the entire spillway category under the history of St. Charles Parish, it captures the entire history of the location along with the 1973 flood, plus it avoids having multiple entries for the same area. I will not try to change your reversal, but we now have multiple entries that could fit under another category. All good, though.
I know you won't like every change I make because we are not 100% alike, but I appreciate you capturing the history of the region one picture at a time. The reason I started on Wiki was because the area is greatly underserved, it is very unique, and needs to be shared. I'm just sharing Louisiana with others in a more organized manner similar to other states. There is definitely room for both of us and I will continue to avoid your work as best I can. Take care and I look forward to all your new contributions. Spatms (talk) 03:25, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks much for your detailed and thoughtful reply. Most of it is not directly related to why I contacted you, but is interesting and informative none the less. Cheers to your desire to improve coverage and organization relating to Louisiana (and other topics useful in Commons).
To return briefly to the topic of my early message: Sometimes I when spot checking your edits to things on my watch list, I don't understand what you are trying to do. Perhaps consider when removing a category, especially when the reason may not be obvious to other experienced users active in the topics, rather than state "Format" as the edit summary, you say something more informative, like maybe "removing Category:(name) because (reason)".
To return to your discussion above, I most certainly do not assert any kind of ownership over organization of Greater New Orleans/Louisiana topics, so you are not "encroaching", you and others are very welcome collaborators. If/when there is honest difference of opinions between experienced users as to naming or categorization, discussion is often helpful - for example on category talk pages or user talk pages. Seeing how things are done for other places that seems successfully well organized can be useful examples as well. (I am aware that Greater Orleans, like many locations that had many active contributions in the very early years of the project, sometimes had some categorizations that now seem a bit unusual for the simple reason that they were created "from the ground up" long before similar categories "from the top down" were standardized. When they've been fit into appropriate parent categories and are useful, renaming has not always been a high priority with me compared to other tasks.)
I find your statement "Louisiana lags behind other states" interesting - I'm not disagreeing, my impression would have been while we're not one of the best organized we're a bit above average all in all, but I guess we're looking at different things.
Looking, I couldn't find evidence of any WikiProject Louisiana on Commons, so I've started a category page in line with that of some other states: Category:WikiProject Louisiana. I suggest we start discussion on the talk page - and if appropriate spin off other discussion pages. Your participation is very welcome, from improvements in this starter page to listing of topics for improvement. I further suggest we invite participation from other Louisianans on Wikimedia Commmons. Red beans & ricely, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:32, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi again, thank you for the reply and hope all is well. You may have noticed that I've become more descriptive in my edit summaries. If I'm removing a category, I've changed the description to that exact verbiage moving forward. I will reserve using the term, Changing Format, to when I change the "wiki code" to make changes to the presentation. Regarding my edits, I may also change categories if they no longer make sense as you described in your reply, but they have to match similar categories already established in other areas of the United States. I may also move photos under a different category. For instance, if there are multiple photos of a school, I will add all the photos to a new category named for that school. An example would be multiple photos of Jesuit and I develop a Jesuit category. Then, instead of having each photo have the category, High Schools in New Orleans, I add the category, High Schools in New Orleans, under the new Jesuit category capturing all the photos. This is a synopsis of what I'm doing with categorization and hope this better explains my edits.
I can certainly see your point regarding Louisiana being average in coverage and I agree. I think some states like Wyoming and the Dakotas are behind Louisiana in coverage, but we're behind California for instance. Guess what I meant to say is that I'd like to see Louisiana near the top and take us from average to great coverage. That is why I add categories to Louisiana if I find that category in other states and it applies to Louisiana. Additionally, thank you for developing Category:WikiProject Louisiana. I think it will be a big help.
Lastly, please feel free to revert edits that you think were incorrect. I may not get it right 100% of the time, but I'm very deliberate and cautious with my edits. Believe me, my goal is to get it correct every time. I'm open to suggestions, so let me know if there is something you think is beneficial. Ok, I'm off to add school photos to the appropriate parish and make sure the categories in each parish match. Take care! Spatms (talk) 07:48, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
