Gay conversion therapy map edit

Hi Stinger - I am really appreciate of the gay conversion therapy map on Wikipedia, but I wonder if it could be improved? For example, it lumps together countries like Ecuador (where conversion therapy isn't really banned) with countries like Malta and Brazil, where it is. The Brazilian example is also odd because it's in a similar situation to China (but in reverse).

Perhaps the map could be slightly altered (for example) to feature 'Explicitly banned in statute' (Dark blue: Brazil, Malta, Taiwan, Victoria, US states, Canadian provinces), 'De facto statutory ban' (Light blue: Switzerland, Ecuador). China is an odd example - the judiciary has twice ruled it illegal but legal precedents are not enforceable in China. There are also issues with representing the same information across different states. For example, in some countries the therapy is legally limited in some circumstances but not illegal if it happens in non-medical settings (e.g. Argentina, Switzerland). I'd be interested to get your views.Zythe (talk) 14:38, 26 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I like the suggestion between explicitly and de facto banned. I am thinking about following the new bold titles listed in the table on Conversion therapy. I wasn't really sure what to do about China, I am open to any suggestions. Stinger20 (talk) 02:19, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes, I added those for clarity. In the UK we're starting to debate this a lot more and tbh I want journalists to be able to appropriately discuss the legal landscape better! With China I think the text presents it right: courts will likely always rule it illegal, but it can lawfully continue until legislation is laid down.Zythe (talk) 10:37, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

The more I think about it, the less happy I am with China having an odd status. Perhaps we could change it to 'de facto' in the graph, explaining that it's case-by-case in Chinese law still in the article? I also think the Australia colouring was slightly wrong.Zythe (talk) 11:52, 12 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
