You're making things difficult edit

  1. While eventually creating year-specific categories for Category:Columbia University is a noble goal, in the short-term you're making that categorization a lot more difficult than it needs to be. Per Help:Searching, "The maximum search string is 300 characters long." Prior to your changes, finding media without decade/year categories in the 2010s was as simple as this query. Now that you've decided to break things out by year, the required query will be over 140 characters beyond the maximum limit. You went for the easy-to-do task when you could have just as easily chosen to take the long view. It's like every choice people make on Commons (Wikipedia, etc.) is the most short-sighted, self-serving choice of all of the possible choices they could make. Could you restrain yourself?
  2. So you've chosen to make each Category:Columbia University in XXXX a subcategory of Category:Educational institutions in the United States photographed in XXXX. Why do you presume that no other media types other than photographs exist of Columbia University? What is your plan for File:Columbia_University_Tunnels.png which clearly isn't a photograph or for all of the scans of the Columbia yearbooks and annual reports (for example in Category:Columbia University in the 1910s)? -- DanielPenfield (talk) 11:29, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
