First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Re:Eurocoins edit

The coin images that were deleted were all from the website of the European Central Bank, and were deleted per discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Eurocoins (as the deletion summaries state). The images from that site are under a license which is not within Commons licensing policy; it is very unfortunate that so many had to be deleted, but we cannot keep pictures here that are under unfree licenses. The images are replaceable, whether from another site that has photographs under a truly free license or by users photographing the coins themselves. -- Editor at Largetalk 17:01, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The images on EN as en:Image:2ec por.png are within Commons licensing policy? Or they are not within Commons licensing policy, but they are within EN wiki licensing policy? - UP3 17:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, they're not within EN nor commons licensing policy, I nominated them for deletion on the English Wikipedia too. Yonatan talk 18:26, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding your question "Can I ask? What about this site pictures? I would like to find some substitute of the deleted pictures, that has an acceptable licence." ... I don't see any copyright information on that site other than "Design and construction © 2007 The Euro Information Website". If you could link me to a specific page referring to copyright that would be helpful. For now all I can say is that those images look like the ones found on the ECB site; if the ibiblio.org/theeuro site uses images from there they would still be under the same restrictions as the original images found directly on the ECB site. Unless the ibilio site created the images or had them released under a free license or got them from another site that has a free license, they are not useable either. If you can find more info let me know and I'll see what we can figure out :) -- Editor at Largetalk 01:14, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The images of the coins from this site are not the same as those from the ECB website; 'this site' belongs to me. I've uploaded numerous euro images to wikipedia in the past, which have not been deleted. So therefore, I'm going to just upload all of the other images to wikipedia in the same way I have done so for those images.

Do you not understand that the ECB allows use of the images of the euro coins. What about the ECB allowance is unclear? It is a bit difficult to understand, so I can sort these things out for you- I have an office at the ECB and know first hand that the images are in fact allowed to be used for this sort of thing. So before you go deleting more images that cause the rest of us extra work to get them back online, please discuss the situation with me first. I can probably help you to understand what the ECB does allow and what it does not allow- and for understanding copyright restrictions in general.
Basically- nobody- even the ECB can claim or otherwise impose a copyright restriction over any of the euro coin images. The only way this would be remotly applicable is if someone put a euro coin on top of a patterned cloth, photographed it and called it a photographic work of art. But then, the ECB does not allow for that, because NOBODY CAN CALIM COPYRIGHT OR RESTRICTION OVER ANY OF THE EURO COIN IMAGES.
The ECB does not allow the image to be modified in any way and requires the statement that the images are available for free from the ECB website. You can even use the image of a euro coin in an advertisement. You can use an image for the cover of a book that sells for 1.000 euro. You can even use the image for the subject of an artistic work. The source of the image is irrelevant because it is only the image of the coins themselves that are made available. What is done to them afterward- graphically altering and such- are what the ECB has a poblem with.
