media categorization edit

Hi,
I have noticed, that you have been using cat-a-lot for removing hundreds of files from the category "research". I totally agree that this category should only contain subcategories and no individual media files. The problem when categories are just removed without a detailed check of the other remaining categories in which the individual media file is listed is, that you are potentially creating "orphaned" media files. Such files have only one or only a few mismatched and insignificant (for commons) categories and might never be found again by other people, who would sort them in correctly. If the category, which you are removing allready is the last one, the file will come up as uncategorized. This is not an issue, because such files are immediately marked as uncategorized by a bot, which guarantees that someday, they will receive human attention again. The real problem are the other files. Since you seem to be relatively new on Commons I thought that you are probably not yet aware of this issue.

If you just want to remove files from categories without checking for categorization of the affected media I recommend to mark this content as "Media needing category review". This is a category on Commons, see Category:Media needing category review , but media should not be sorted in manually. When you write {{Check categories}} in the description text of a media file, it gets marked with a timestamp and listed on a maintenance category. I don't know if it is possible to do this with cat-a-lot, maybe not (?). If not, the only practicable way to get rid of unwanted content in a category is to check and move out each file individually. --Zaccarias (talk) 18:04, 30 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Zaccarias: Hi Zaccarias, I acknowledge the problem and I admit that I haven't checked every single file going from A-Z. But before the recategorization I've watched at hundreds of the pictures and I think that I don't have produced more than a marginal number of orphans.
Most of category consisted of an Research Excellence gala at the University of the Fraser Valley - these photos showed just random people. How should I (or anybody else) categorize them better without knowing anything about the people shown?
Generally: We need much more people working on categorization!--Viewdusk (talk) 21:55, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Daily gallery updater has failed on User:Viewdusk/Hunting edit

Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, User:Viewdusk/Hunting, has failed. Due to software limitations, the bot has a hard upper-limit of about 6000 files per day (including overflow galleries), while your gallery had 16573 files.

This usually happens because a gallery is too broad, encompassing too many subcategories. Please review the logs here and request that a subcategory be excluded, or narrow your category choice(s).

Please make your request for removal within 4 days, or your gallery will be subject to removal.

Thank you. Magog the Ogre (via OgreBot (talk) 03:25, 2 April 2019 (UTC))Reply
