Hello, Vilem2!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi Vilem2, do not overwrite existing images, as you have done with File:Bois1.jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 13:56, 24 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry, as a beginner in Wiki I have much difficulty with the upload of pictures at Wiki COMMONS. With the file:Bois1.jpg I came ununderstandable (?) in conflict with another picture-file beginning with "Bois...". Therefore I tried to overwrite. Please, can you DELETE the file Bois1.jpg ? because in the meantime I use the same picture with another name "boisdurci.jpg", uploaded in the German Wiki. Sorry, I'l try to improve me, best regards--vilem279.212.31.11 16:35, 24 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have deleted your version of File:Bois1.jpg (showing a mirror), if that was what you meant. There is no reason the delete the original version of File:Bois1.jpg. However, it can be renamed, if the is an urgent name conflict with another wiki. --Túrelio (talk) 16:47, 24 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Turelio, thanks for deleting. I shall try to categorize my pictures in the next days. Is there a possibility to test if a choosen word, for instance "chromolithograhy" is an allowed term of categorizing in Wiki-Commons ?--vilem284.172.96.124 16:12, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
