File:SS Beresford Park.jpg edit

Hello and thank you for uploading a scan of this photograph. Might I ask where you found this image? You wrote that it was your "own work" and granted a Creative Commons licence, but at the same time you credited the original image to Leslie W. Hansen. Actually scanning a document or creating a faithful photograph of a 2-dimensional item does not create a new copyright for you and the file would in the public domain. So we need to know where an when the original image was created and first published. De728631 (talk) 01:54, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
I have acquired a number of documents from within my family including pictures, letters, postcards, telegrams etc and this particular item was among them saved from when my late father was in the Merchant Marines in Canada. These were pics he took and the particular card in question he wrote on the back that this was one of the ships he worked on. I could not find an image of this particular Park Ship and thought wiki was the best place to share it. I trust that this was indeed the SS Bereford Park since he identified it on the reverse of the pic (Also, scanned and uploaded) Even though the original photographer did not specify what ship it was, my dad did. So this and its accompanying note is the first time it has been published on the web to the best of my knowledge. Referencing the original photographer was a way to link the information on the front and back of the card for the benefit of the reader. I wondered if I should have included the pic and the notes in the same file/image to address the copyright concern in this case? Vinnygroid (talk) 16:47, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I didn't find Hansen's year of death but this is quite interesting: https://museum.wales/articles/1515/The-Hansen-Collection-of-shipping-photographs/ --Achim55 (talk) 17:35, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I did come across that as well. There are several other ships in the Wiki Park Ships page that shows a list of the ships some of which my dad served on but none had links or pics associated with them. This SS Bereford Park ship was the only one in my dad's material that I could find other than pics of the decks that I also uploaded yesterday; Portland Park and Rockland Park and Radio room. Thank you Achim55. That website states that the first Leslie Hansen retired in 1975, so he would still have been alive at that time. Which makes this photograph copyrighted and non-free unless the heirs of Leslie W. Hansen provide a free licence. I'm afraid we'll have to take it down. For clarification: Vinnygroid, owning a physical copy of a photograph does not make you own its copyright unless it was transferred in writing by the original photographer. Unfortunately that is why you may not share this image here. De728631 (talk) 21:30, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Interesting but Understood. It's a shame the image cannot be used as there is so little information on line about the Merchant Ships especially Park ships. To clarify, I assume any images my late father took that are in my possession would be fine to use though? All the other ones I scanned are the only copies in existence. Yes, all images that your father took are fine to be uploaded here. Please credit him in the |author= field and use {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or similar licences to indicate that you inherited or otherwise acquired the photos and their rights. De728631 (talk) 22:50, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
