Thank you for your uploads edit

Thank you for all the fine uploads from Statens Museum for Kunst, September-October 2023. Just two points about categories:

Do not be discouraged by this. It should be relatively easy to fix. And of course it can be fixed after the upload, but that requires manual work.

Otherwise, this is a fine series of upoads, in high quality and with extensive notes the do Statens Museum for Kunst proud. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 04:42, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the kind words and comments. I'm not discouraged, but I'm taking a break to address your comments. The first is more straightforward than the second. I've been trying to use the mapping we agreed on earlier this year, but seems like I mixed it up.

So it the mixup is that I should have created a category Etchings by... in the Category Prints in the... Kim Bach (talk) 20:16, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

So, about the second item: If the artist made etchings, there might be a category for "Etchings by xxx in the SMK". That would have to lead to both "Etchings in the SMK by artist" and "Prints by xxx in the SMK". That is, however, a complicated setup. It would be much easier to keep the existing reference "Prints by xxx in the SMK" and then have the individual files categorized as etchings, woodcuts and so on. But the choice is yours, both setups are valid. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 01:49, 10 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
So the simple solution would be to stop adding the category Etchings in the... to the Prints by... category.
Eg. Cat:Prints by Lodewijk de Deyster in the Statens Museum for Kunst should have the Cat:Etchings in the Statens Museum for Kunst removed?
The problem is that the algorithm is using the category at both levels.
I'll implement the change, and do some long overdue refactoring :-)
ps. Cleaning up in the categories, that has already been created, could be automated (at a later point :-)). Kim Bach (talk) 20:27, 10 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the solution you suggest is fine. And the automated cleaning up would be appreciated. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 01:33, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kim. From the latest uploads: I looked at the Marstrand painting of Gottlieb Bindesbøll (KMS 1620). The dimensions were wrong, so I have corrected them. What could have happened here? And please always quote the smallest dimensions, if there is a dimension with frame and without frame. The other thing was the absence of the "location", Room 218B. It is mentioned in the source, so would it be possible to carry it over? I have inserted it manually. Otherwise, top quality with many fine notes. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 08:45, 19 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I've seen this.
SMK operates with Net (Netto) and Gross (Brutto) measurements, but it can also be bladmaal.
I've changed the code som that it always uses the smallest dimensions, not looking at the Netto, Brutto or bladmaal identifiers.
Another thing that I noticed was missing is the depth, I suppose that for paintings this really doesn't apply.
In the example the depth was only Brutto measurement, I suppose that is the depth of the frame.
There's probably also the possibility that an artwork has several parts, I'll look into that.
Regarding the addition of the Location (Room number), I've discussed this with SMK, and they think this information is too much subject to change, so they think we should ignore it. WLKBot (talk) 17:17, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi again. This sounds very fine. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 04:29, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've restarted the batch, and I've added handling of 3D models (.stl files), SMK has 270 of those. I'm a bit doubtful about the categorisation and if I should use the same metadata as used by the 2D file. WLKBot (talk) 19:28, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Categories for art works edit

Hello, Kim Bach. I've noticed an issue with some categories created by this bot where the category for an artist's name is set by retrieving the name from Wikidata. An example is Category:Prints by Mary Cassatt in the Statens Museum for Kunst. That category needs to be diffused into Category:Prints by Mary Cassatt by museum, but HotCat won't do it because of the way Category:Mary Cassatt is coded. When the bot creates these categories, could it hard code the category names so that tools like HotCat and Cat-a-lot can work with them? Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:22, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for your message and bringing this to my attention.
The algorithm was written like that to avoid hardcoding, but was already giving it second thoughts, for instance the code is assuming that wikidata p373 will be populated at a later state, if not already set.
I'll make the requested change, which is simple, since hardcoding is already done if the artist doesn't have a wikidata-number at runtime (which it always has since I'm creating those semi-manually on the fly).
Current code
if smk_artist_wikidata_q.startswith('Q'):
# The artist has a wikidata Q-number:
artist_commons_category = '{{Data|item=' + smk_artist_wikidata_q + '|property=p373|numval=1}}'
else:
artist_commons_category = artist_name_en
Changed code
artist_commons_category = wikidata.get_property_value("P373", smk_artist_wikidata_q)
if artist_commons_category == None:
artist_commons_category = artist_name_en
Please review the first category creation made after the code change:
Category:Drawings by Adriaen Brouwer in the Statens Museum for Kunst
I'll also put this on my list of things that should be corrected in a bulk batch in the future. Thank you! Kim Bach (talk) 06:19, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Kim Bach: That looks great, thanks! If you'd like to let me know when your batch run is done, I'll take a look to see what needs to be diffused. Thanks again! -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:11, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'll do that! Kim Bach (talk) 10:10, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
