Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

積極的なサブカテゴリ化のお願い edit

八戸市内のバスの多数の写真投稿、御苦労さまです。バスに関しては全部で130枚近くありましたが、これをCategory:Hachinohe, Aomoriに入れますと、バス以外の写真の発見が難しくなり著しく検索性が低下します。一般的にコモンズにおいては、ブラウザで写真のサムネイルを表示する関係上、一つのカテゴリに含める枚数をなるべく減らす努力が求められます。場合によっては、写真2枚からサブカテゴリ化をするぐらいの心がけで構いません。
私の一存で、Category:Buses in Hachinohe, Category:Banks in Hachinohe, Category:Taxis in Hachinoheというのを作成してバス、銀行、タクシーをそちらに仕分け致しました。
今後投稿される際は、（自分以外の人間の投稿の可能性も含めて）写真の総枚数を予測した上で、あらかじめサブカテゴリを作成して頂きますようお願いいたします。他の自治体にないカテゴリでも、整理されて見やすくなるようならば、積極的に作成して構いません。上記以外でも、例えば八戸市内の農協、ホテル、商店、郵便局といった写真のサブカテゴリ化についても是非御検討下さい。--トトト (talk) 08:43, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.
