Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

taxonavigation authority edit

Hello, my friend,
Just a small mail about this modification.
When the author is in parenthesis like (Scopoli, 1786), it means something and the parenthesis should not be suppressed.
The parenthesis means that the author has created this species with another name. But later, another biologist has renamed a part of the name (the genus most often). In thoses very common cases, the parenthesis are kept and sometimes the new biologist name is added (Like in Mogador (Linnaeus), 1798). Cheers Liné1 12:26, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Taxonavigation edit

Hello my friend,
this modification is not a good idea. As Animalia in the category Eukaryota, Eukaryota should also be {{Taxonavigation}}.
The idea is that a child taxon (like Category:Acinonyx_jubatus) should contain exactly its parent {{Taxonavigation}} (like Category:Acinonyx)+ itself (like Species|Acinonyx jubatus|).

category:Female Panthera leo and category:Male Panthera leo edit

Hello. Just wondering why you renamed these, and I also wanted to point out that there is the same naming for Category:Passer domesticus, so you might want to change that too. I used the binomial name, although some pages use the English common names like Category:Roosters or Category:Lions in art. I'm not sure which is best or what the logic is with that; maybe people feel it's best not to mix English and binomial names? Richard001 (talk) 03:48, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I originally stumbled onto the category "Cubs", which was full of lions. I therefore created a new more-specifically-named category for them and moved the images. I named it "Category:Panthera leo (juvenile)" for several reasons. One was to use the binomial name. Secondly that name was to come first, as it was the most important defining characteristic, with "juvenile" being additional information/further sub-definition. Also because the images in there were apparently no longer supposed to be in the parent category "Panthera leo": therefore images would still be tagged with the binomial name, just with an addition. The addition in parentheses set it apart from the binomial name and marked it as a further description. I chose the English word(s), because straight Latin would probably be less likely to be commonly known. Also the words in question are Latin-derived or similar to other European languages, so there is probably a higher chance of somebody understanding it, as many people known at least bits of some European language.
While doing that I came upon the Male/Female categories. Applying the reasoning above, I decided to rename those categories. As said before, the scheme "Female Panthera leo", has several (to me) negative traits. It mixes up Latin and English in a way which makes Panthera look like a subgenus, and doesn't set the "female" apart as further description. And because it is seemingly supposed to be used instead of the top category, placing binomial name first makes it apparent what it is about, with further definition added in parentheses.
Summary: in the fight "Category:further-sub-division important info" vs. "Category:important info (further-sub-division)", the latter seemed more reasonable, practical and elegant to me. My apologies if I offended you.
I hope this was not too much tl;dr, and not as convoluted as I think it might be. ~ Winterkind (talk) 23:59, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the explanation. Richard001 (talk) 03:19, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category:White Tigers edit

~ Winterkind (talk) 23:12, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Anas platyrhynchos subcategories edit

Good idea! Much needed. Maybe also Cat:Anas platyrhynchos (pairs) and Cat:Anas platyrhynchos (flocks)? - MPF (talk) 22:55, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

--Kersti (talk) 21:07, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
