Please do not overwrite files edit

I noticed that you uploaded a file using the same name as another file, which already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you. For more information, please see Commons:Overwriting files.

Also, Wikimedia commons is not wikipedia, and files uploaded here do not necessarily need to comply with the Neutral point of view. If you want upload the NPOV version of the map, the map can be uploaded as separate files. Please see Commons:Disputed_territories to get more information. Thank you. Akira CA (talk) 00:36, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Akira CA: And yet you replaced the existing maps instead of uploading new ones, so what you said can be thrown out the window. You don't want the maps replaced with ones without Taiwan because you don't agree with what that implies. The fact is a file not used on Wikipedia is not very useful and you know it. You are trying to use the Commons policy to push your POV on Wikipedia. That behaviour will get you in a lot of trouble. Ythlev (talk) 06:46, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Ythlev: You are told to Commons:Assume good faith, Commons:No personal attacks, and stop posting threatening messages like "get you in a lot of trouble". I overwrite the map because I regard such edits uncontroversial and saves a lot of efforts comparing to replacing the files on Wikipedia. You surely can undo these changes if you want, but overwriting files in a POV-pushing way while reverted by four different contributors more than ten times is still wrong. Akira CA (talk) 07:00, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Akira CA: And what if another user reverts your edit saying non-neutral images are allowed? My point is maps on Commons should still be neutral even if not required. If you can't respect that, then the only solution is to host the files on Wikipedia instead. The NPOV policy on Commons is not a way for you to circumvent the NPOV policy on Wikipedia. Ythlev (talk) 07:43, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Then I will create a separate file, that's it. It is crucial for you to understand Commons is essentially different from Wikipedia. Commons is Commons, Wikipedia is Wikipedia. Commons is not a part of Wikipedia. Obeying the Commons policy cannot be circumventing Wikipedia policy. Akira CA (talk) 08:02, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
But you have. You've obstructed replacing with a neutral version (which according to you is the easier thing to do). You've also obstructed the removal of non-neutral content on Wikipedia. If that is not circumventing policy I don't know what is. Ythlev (talk) 08:14, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Far-right POV pushing version reverted by numerous editors will never be a "neutral" one, whether regarding your very history of canvassing, cherry-picking, zero-consensus MoS vandalizing, and 3RR-violating edit warring or not. Moreover, no matter the file is POV or not, overwriting files more than ten times during edit wars are irrefutable violations of COM:OVERWRITE, with all your whataboutism above only pushing you further away from not being blocked. However, by acknowledging the status quo on the current most NPOV maps we still have a chance to collaborate, how do you think? Akira CA (talk) 09:26, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

If an RfC on the issue concludes that including Taiwan on maps of China violates NPOV and you still call it far-right POV pushing, if you think three users' opinion trump a well-discussed RfC, then is little chance to collaborate. Ythlev (talk) 10:04, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

I can't respond to what part of COM:OVERWRITE I violated unless you point them out. Bear in mind you also over-wrote files. Ythlev (talk) 10:23, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Covid-19 map for Bailiwick of Guernsey edit

Hey Ythlev, apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree, but I was looking into finding/creating a map for use at 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Guernsey and noticed you've provided a script/produced maps yourself. As someone with absolutely no clue where to begin (and no knowledge of what github even is) I just wondered if you could produce a map for the Bailiwick of Guernsey or give me any guidance how to do so myself? If not, no worries – I know I'm being a pain! Thanks for your contributions so far. Formulaonewiki (talk) 13:20, 21 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

With only two cases, I'm not sure it is worth the trouble. I'll need a blank map with the name or code of areas, and the data. They are not always easy to come by. Ythlev (talk) 14:04, 21 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply. I actually ended up working out how to make one of my own — I think it turned out ok! Formulaonewiki (talk) 23:18, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

COVID-19 maps edit

Hey, nice job with those COVID-19 maps, but could you please round the legend numbers up/down to the nearest integer? Half a case or a tenth of a case just looks a bit silly and messy. Thanks! --HyperGaruda (talk) 16:43, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Also could you please define the numbers per 100.000 f.i., not per million? Small communities with a few infections on first glance seem to suddenly be inundated by Covid-19 patients, and I think it is fair to say that it might upset readers who are not used to abstraction or indeed mathematics. Eissink (talk) 18:55, 22 March 2020 (UTC).Reply

Netherlands COVID-19 map edit

Hi I saw you have made a map for the Netherlands that shows how many cases of COVID-19 are reported by one million habitants. The downside in this case no municipalties in the Netherlands do have a population of a million. I highly recommend on using a parameter of 1.000 or 10.000 inhabitants. The amounts now generated are way to high and even higher than the absolute statistics, so they even give a wrong image of the amount of cases. I hope you will consider my tip, and I hope to hear from you if you have any questions. Melvinvk (talk) 18:59, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
In addition the source you provided for the Statistics is also using a parameter of 1.000. Melvinvk (talk) 19:00, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Melvinvk, Ythlev has changed the map to per 10.000. Eissink (talk) 20:45, 22 March 2020 (UTC).Reply

SVG converted to PNG for thumbnail edit

Your images are great and SVG's are great. But having a transparent background on the SVG causes wikimedia to convert the background to black when it generates a PNG thumbnail (specifically the UK & US maps I've noticed so far), thus rendering the key entirely pointless because you can't read the numbers. Can you find a way to change this so the PNG thumbnails are rendered with a white background and the key is readable like in the SVG original? Thanks! DivingSteve (talk) 23:05, 30 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's more of a browser issue. It's easier to change the background by using something like this. Ythlev (talk) 17:54, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

important remark regarding CORONA Maps edit

Hi, we appreciate your work and would add just one comment: With regard of authenticy it seems be to necessary to rename maps according to the particular date they are referring to in oder to let the user decide when to include them into the articles in wikipedia. This also makes it possible to finally join the to an animation indidually and make sure that only desired data is taken into account. thx Markus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Correctorgrande (talk • contribs) 00:40, 23 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

File names are not designed to be changed regularly. I've included the date on the maps. Ythlev (talk) 10:01, 23 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 04:48, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

COVID-19 maps of Spain edit

Hello. Great job with all maps you are creating. If I can suggest something, I think that you could keep former versions of the maps and upload a new one, but not updating the previous one. I mean, it could be interesting to have a different map for each day. They can be used to show how the disease spreaded across the country. What do you think? --Millars (talk) 00:12, 26 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

My maps are not particularly suitable for that because the scale changes according to the figures. I can make an animated gif if you like. Ythlev (talk) 04:46, 26 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

COVID-19 map of the US edit

Hello, on 27 March 2020 I updated File:COVID-19 outbreak USA per capita cases map.svg, correcting the horrible shape of the Northern Mariana Islands to something that actually resembles it (I also made this long-overdue correction to File:Blank_USA,_w_territories.svg). You updated the map several times after that, apparently starting from your own file and thus erasing the changes that I made. Please use the file that I posted and make future edits from there, to preserve the corrected shape. Thank you.

By the way, there have been two cases in the Northern Mariana Islands.[3] Heitordp (talk) 08:59, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

The dataset I use does not have figures for Northern Mariana Islands. If you can provide one with it, I can include it, but otherwise there is not really a point of putting in the effort is there? Ythlev (talk) 09:10, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I see, you're using a script to generate the file. Thanks for putting it in Github to allow collaboration. I proposed changes there to the population file and the US map. Heitordp (talk) 23:43, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

How to create a new map template edit

Hi. Thanks for your work on ythlev/covid-19. I would like to use it to create a similar map for a U.S. state (Florida). Could you provide some guidance on how to find or create a template for that state? Many thanks. - MrX 13:47, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

You can search on Commons or Arcgis. Keep in mind not to violate copyright restrictions. They are not always easy to come by, which is why I don't make them for every country. Ythlev (talk) 14:00, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what to search for. I tried using this map which has shapes for each county, but it did not work.File:COVID-19 Cases in Florida by counties.svg. 15:12, 29 March 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrX (talk • contribs) 15:12, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
What didn't work? My script? The script relies on search and replace, so you want the svg to be as clean as possible. The map you linked, I cannot properly render it on my browser, so it may be corrupt. There also needs to be some key to identify the areas, like county name or county code. Something like File:Map of Florida counties numbered.svg. Ythlev (talk) 16:15, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
The script did not generate an error, but it also did not change the svg file. Perhaps the file I'm using is corrupt. I will try again tomorrow with you suggestions. Thanks again. - MrX 01:33, 30 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Map of Wales would be good edit

Hi Ythlev - "bore da", ("good morning") as we say in Welsh! I see you're creating wonderful maps of this damn COVID-19. PLEASE can you do one of Wales (similar to the one you did on England)? NHS Wales is separate from NHS England, and all our stats can be found here. Thanks! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 06:06, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I will need blank map with the corresponding areas and their populations. Ythlev (talk) 06:41, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Brilliant! There are 22 counties (also called 'local authority' and 'Principal areas'), all found on File:Wales location map.svg. The location / names of the counties can be found here. Population of all counties can be found here. I can use svg to translate into Welsh.
No maps exist of the 7 Health Boards which make up NHS Wales. Thanks! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 09:25, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi again! User:XrysD has really moved quickly to produce this svg map of all Welsh counties (File:Wales Principal Areas Map.svg). He will also amend it to include all the Health Boards. Both will be needed, Health Boards and % of deaths per county (Pricipal Areas). Thanks Ythlev! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 06:45, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
The data does not appear to be fetch-able. I'll need to find some other way. Ythlev (talk) 09:33, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Have you seen this one - here for cases per 100K of pop? Or maybe this one for deaths per county etc? Llywelyn2000 (talk) 11:06, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes. It is not fetch-able, and I don't have the time to manually type the figures. Ythlev (talk) 11:16, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Scotland and England COVID map edit

Hi Ythlev. There's a discussion here, and consensus has been reached that both your fine maps together with the Wales COVID map, could be used in the article side by side. The only problem is that the key / range differs. The agreed key is on the Wales map here. Problematic maps on COVID-19 pandemic in Asia edit

Your maps claims[6][7] Arunachal Pradesh (see original map) to be a disputed territory when it is controlled by India. Can you modify it and show it as Indian region? Furthermore, you are showing Kashmir to be disputed between India and Pakistan, even though on Wikipedia we show Kashmir to be administered by India and Pakistan as internationally recognized region than simply legitimize Chinese administration there.  Consider fixing problems with the map. National Electoral Calendars edit

This map is for the article 2021 national electoral calendar. The policy of these articles is that by-elections are not included. If they were included, then almost every country would have national elections every year. 2nd round elections are included if it is national policy to hold a second round, but in this case it is just a Georgia-specific policy, even though it is for their representatives in the national senate. If you disagree with this policy, please argue for a change in the talk page of the article. Sladnick (talk) 18:12, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

One is a by-election, the other isn't. Ythlev (talk) 15:40, 24 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's still a Georgia-specific policy to have a runoff. The United States is a very unusual case because much about elections are controlled by the states, not by the federal government. But this is just how these Wikipedia articles have categorized such races — it should be open to change that practice, I just ask that this be taken up on the article talk page and not by changing the map in a way that conflicts with the current practice. Malaysia COVID-19 map edit

Hi, could you please update File:COVID-19 outbreak Malaysia per capita cases map.svg? or could you please provide how to calculate cases per capita or some github or whatever page that can easily make the map since the figures on map captions might keep changing due to increasing or decreasing new cases?--Zh9567 (talk) 14:26, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cases per capita is 100000 * cases / population, for each state. The thresholds of each band is as follows
  • 0
  • 1 / 9 * rate_mean
  • 4 / 9 * rate_mean
  • 9 / 9 * rate_mean
  • 16 / 9 * rate_mean

where rate_mean is the total number of cases / number of states. Ythlev (talk) 15:05, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
