The Surya temple of Katarmal is a complex of fifteen Hindu temples on top of a lofty hill near Kosi river bank with sweeping views of the Himalayas. The site expanded over 9th to 13th century, but is likely older given its mention in older Hindu texts. The site likely had wooden temples before the 9th century. It is about 20 kilometers from Almora.

The main temple is dedicated to the Hindu Sun god, regionally called Aditya (in Himalayan communities, this temple is more commonly called Bara Aditya mandir). The temple architecture and artwork show features found in early Sun temples in Rajasthan and Odisha. The other 14 temples are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Durga and other Hindu deities. The Sun temple faces east, has a triratha garbhagriya, a mandapa that likely was added in 12th or 13th century. The temple once had exquisitely carved wood artwork with Hindu themes; this is now on display in Delhi National Museum.
