Note that this block (allocated since Unicode 1.1 in June 1993, and synchronized with the ISO/IEC 10646 standard) merges and replaces two blocks previously defined in the obsolete Unicode version 1.0.0 (starting in October 1991): U+3300-337F (CJK Squared Words) and U+3380-33FF (CJK Squared Abbreviations); however their existing encoded characters were not modified, where Unicode 1.1 added telegraph symbols for hours and days in the two previous parts. The block was later completed in Unicode 4.0 with additional compatibility characters for squared Latin abbreviations in ranges U+3377-337A, U+33DE-33DF, and U+33FF.
