Left and Right edit

It seems that "Left" and "Right" are not used in the iconpurist's way to mean "as the descending driver sees them" but with the common meaning of the artist's left and right. Bring hosepipes and pepper spray to fend off the "correctors".--SilasW (talk) 19:01, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

All original icons and those recently created by User:Wiebevl using "left" and "right" as intended. Most other icons have been substituted, not just correcting the name but using smarter svg code shrinking those icons up to 90%!! axpdeHello! 19:40, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

A surfeit of icons edit

Trying to find an icon that is for a narrow parallel line can be time-consuming, frustrating (not just mentally but also by there not being the desired icon), and the ruin of what appears because there are (pixillated) issues of width and location. We get by in writing with 26 or so letters. What is needed for these parallel railways is fewer but elemental icons, all standard size, which by use of OVER can be combined to show previously unimagined track arrangements--SilasW (talk) 19:01, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

If you're tired using parallel railway icons, how about using half width icons, just as suggested at the top of this category page? Regards axpdeHello! 19:43, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I made this   (vSTRa!+l): It enables a two-row diagrammation of   (ABZgl+l) with room to add the name of the short “line” that closes the triangle (this is very needed for Portuguese rail, probably in others too). See examples (→).

My question is: What would be the name for this? Full system needs names for all four orientations (up+left, as drawn, and up+right, down+right, and down+left), and all twelve possible states of activity (I colored the 3 segments to make it easy to explain to denser types like me! ;-) — in total 48 new icons and their names.

Have you ever thought about using overlay to reduce the amount of needed icons? axpdeHello! 20:16, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes. This thing is an overlay of   (STRlf) and   (vSTRg+l) — but I’m raising the issue here because I think this combination is “interesting” enough be be worth encoding separately.
(Unless the trend is to reduce the whole set of icons to those atomic icons and stack them in fives and sixes till the desired arrangement comes out. Is it?)
Anyway, this is sticky ground. In wp:pt overlays and most of the BS machinery only works because I worked some 2h nonstop importing anew each and every BS* template I could find in wp:en (and some from wp:de) — hopefully not losing translated information in the meantime and even so disrupting the rendering of BS diagrams during that change over period. Nobody can be sure that further version ramifications in templates will not cause, again, that some wp’s will not lag behind wp:de and wp:en concerning railroad diagrams. Icons should be simple to use and overlays are not simple.
Can I please have a suggestion for the right way to name this new set of icons?
Tuvalkin (talk) 00:55, 6 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
In all the diagrams I made so far I encountered only one instance where an icon like this is used, therefore I used an overlay. If and only if this complete set of icons is needed there is no simple way of naming: (there's 8 possible variations per icon)

I really think overlays should be considered. Wiebevl (talk) 07:11, 10 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, shouldn't it be something like "vABZgl-ABZg+l" ?!? axpdeHello! 13:45, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Or vABZgl-STRg+l, but you're right, ABZ fits better. Frankly I don't see these ones as a valuable addition. Wiebevl (talk) 21:12, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
