Category:Scholars and academics edit

Category:Scholars and academicsDelete
Category:Scholars and academics by subjectDelete
Category:Academics, Category:Curators, & Category:Scholars are all their own category trees. This unfortunate 'and' category is an uneeded layer. Many subs are either academics or scholars (or something else) and not both as 'and' would indicate.

Just to elaborate... Category:Scholars seems like the best place to categorized people based on their subject of study, regardless of their employment status. Category:Academics seems like a good place to categorize people based on their employment status/history, rank, etc. So Category:Scholars by subject, but not Category:Academics by subject.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Themightyquill (talk • contribs) 30 March 2020 (UTC)

It is a problematic CFD, because enwiki has en:Category:Scholars and academics--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:59, 15 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Estopedist1 @Joshbaumgartner@Themightyquill I independently noticed this and started a discussion on en wiki (en:Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2022_May_3#Category:Scholars_and_academics). Maybe a rename like I propose there would also help here? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 10:00, 3 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Piotrus: I think that could work. @Estopedist1 and Themightyquill: What do you think about a rename to Category:People in academia? Josh (talk) 10:08, 4 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Estopedist1 and Joshbaumgartner: I'd say "Scholar" is someone who studies something, and "Academic" is a scholar who works at a university or research institute. In a field like sociology, there's going to be near complete overlap, but not everywhere. A lot of people call themselves historians, but most popular historians wouldn't call themselves academics. The same goes for religious scholars, philosophers, and a variety of other areas of interest. So I think if academics were categorized by their location (be it country or university), but in terms of their research, categorized as "scholars of x". Something like this:

I hope that makes sense. Hopefully wikipedia will follow our logic. -- Themightyquill (talk) 11:47, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think the proposed structure looks good. We can tweak it over time if the need arises. Josh (talk) 01:24, 2 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Note that English Wikipedia's discusion ended as no consensus, I am said that nobody here voiced their thoughts there. en:Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2022_July_29#Category:Scholars_and_academics for reference.
