Category talk:Trams in Russia by model
I oppose the proposed rename, these are models of tram, not types. Model indicates a specific build or class, ie a KTM-5/T3, type would indicate a configuration, ie articulated/cable/electric. Just as we have models of cars and types of cars we have models of trams and types of trams. I would also note that 'Standard naming' seems a disingenuous reason given that this cat was created before Category:Trams by type by country. I would suggest that both Category:Trams by type by country and Category:Trams in Germany by vehicle be renamed to Category:Trams by model by country and Category:Trams in Germany by model receptively. - Category:Trams in Stuttgart by vehicle has also been nominated for rename, I oppose that for the same reasons, and propose it be renamed to Category:Trams in Stuttgart by model if it is to be renamed at all. Liamdavies (talk) 04:41, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- You are right and your proposal is acceptable but I have some objections. "Model" is too ambiguous word, it means primarily a scale model/maquette (see Category:Models of automobiles and hundreds of related categories)¨and can be confusing for some users. Particular types of vehicles are called "models" because they are similar to their "model" which preceded the production. "By type" is more universal naming convention. "By model" is very rare and unsystematic categorization (I found 2 cases only - Category:Engines by model and Category:Guitars by model - and I'm not sure that the word "model" is used exactly in your way) and one case of quite different meaning (Category:Portraits by model). What about to use Category:Trams in Russia by manufacturer (grouping models by brand) instead of this category? - Yes I am right, and my proposal is acceptable, therefore no changes are needed. There is no need to rename this category; anyone with even the most basic understanding of the English language should be able to understand what the meaning of model is in this context, it is not ambiguous to those that know and understand English.
