The Pre-GLAM Report gives a detailed description on the preparatory phase to start the GLAM project in Kolikata Little Magazine Library O Gabeshana Kendra Intimation PhaseeditIt was late March, 2015, when Santanu Chandra and Sujay Chandra, two Wikimedians from West Bengal, came in contact with Mr. Sandip Dutta, founder of Kolikata Little Magazine Library O Gabeshana Kendra (KLMLGK) having one of the finest collection of alternative magazines in India. The privately owned library comprises approximately 70,000 experimental, radical, alternative and avant-garde periodicals and little magazines, even from the pre-independence era. Mr. Sandip Dutta had the desire to digitize all his collection and when he learned from the Wikimedians about ongoing GLAM project collaborations with Wikimedia community throughout the world, he immediately accepted the offer to get it done collaboratively. Administrative PhaseeditWikimedia India responded fast into the matter and Program Director of the organisation sent a request letter for GLAM collaboration to the Secretary, KLMLGK on April 4, 2015. After getting consensus from the board meeting of the institute, the Secretary, KLMLGK sent a consent letter to Program Director, Wikimedia India on April 14, 2015. Preparatory PhaseeditAfter the administrative works are done swiftly, it was the time for preparation and planning. The Wikimedians from West Bengal had detailed and elaborate discussions with Program Director, Wikimedia India about logistics support and funding of the project via Facebook chat group under the name of Bengal GLAM. Grant requesteditGrant for funding the project was requested to Wikimedia India on 8th May, 2015 and on 8th June, 2015, the project was accepted to be funded in the fiscal year 2015-16. Scanner procurementeditFor scanning equipment, it was piQx Xcanex Portable Document Scanner, which caught attention as it was a low cost scanner with a good quality scanning ability but after discussions with other experienced Wikimedians, it was rejected and Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 scanner was selected for the project. A local vendor was contacted on 8th June, 2015 and on 11th June, he demonstrated about the scanning procedures using this scanner. Wikimedia India officially decided to purchase the scanner on the same day and on 17th June paid the vendor. The scanner was delivered to Santanu Chandra on 18th June. |
