Scope | Nominated as the most valued image on Commons within the scope: "Allegory of America" engraving by Jan Galle after Jan van der Straet |
Used in | Global use |
Reason | This picture is a historical image (not reproduced or modified) of the supposed historic "discovery" of the Americas, presenting Amerigo Vespucci awakening "America" against a luscious background of American flora and fauna, but also with cannibals in the distance. It is the work of the Flemish artist, Stradanus. The image is an iconic portrayal of Europe as a calculating man, and the "Americas" as a naked woman to be taken or rescued (damsel in distress) surrounded by extravagant natural resources, but also by cluless men. -- Caballero//Historiador ☊ |
