Voting 2024 theme

Background

The International organizing team for Wiki Loves Africa conducted a survey to determine what should be the theme for the 2024 (and perhaps 2025) iteration of the contest. Respondents provided feedback via a google form which was collected and analyzed and condensed into 4 theme ideas by the organizing team.

This current stage of the community collaborative process consists to a voting by members of the community, prospective participants and stakeholders to help us make a final decision on what should be the theme for Wiki Loves Africa 2024.

2024 Theme options

Please note: after each proposed theme there is a section for constructive discussion as to the benefits or concerns around each theme. Please engage with the proposed themes and share your thoughts with regards to perceived practicality and challenges. Please make sure you sign your comments with 4 x ~’s.

Option A: Celebrate Africa

Competition scope: To include submissions of media that visualise the JOY, exuberance, and happiness that YOU find in the either the everyday or extraordinary aspects of living in Africa as Africans.
Submissions should be the visuals, sights and sounds that celebrate contemporary Africa, in all its forms, and that are unique to Africa. To focus on the positive and single moments, small and momentous, that keep us going. Visuals or media could be a moment captured or the elements, actions, activities, and events that Africans associate with displays of happiness, joy, celebrations, cultural or contemporary moments that show Africans involved in a celebratory activity and/or elements of the activity/event in itself. It can include everyday situations, landscapes, peoples, sport, wildlife, nature, cultural events. It should focus on contemporary Africa, and not be limited to, but can include cultural identities, rites, rituals and celebrations.



Option B: Industry and Commerce

Competition scope: To include submissions of media that illustrates Africa's buzzing formal and informal industrial sector, to include large and small scale manufacturing, processing, and resources. The scope also include the commerce spaces, street stalls and kiosks, markets and trade centers and locations, stock exchanges and shopping malls that distribute the goods of these industrial actions. The scope also includes manufacturing plants, machine tools, processes, materials, energy and water as well as environmental consequences of manufacturing activities. The theme may also include social, financial, and legal elements associated with commerce and industry (eg, negotiations of worker rights and wages, strikes, guilds, security boots, coins, trade routes etc.)


Option C: Africa Create

Competition scope: To include submissions of media that portray the process of creating, inventing, manufacturing culturally defined items, make-up, art, hairstyles, music, dance, clothes and woven materials etc. Basically, elements that promotes Africa's rich heritage and culture. expressed through music, song, dance, and movement.


Option D: Bio-diversity

Competition scope: To include submissions that represent the diversity and richness of Africa's many bio and ecological elements, floral kingdoms, and its living fauna; to include media of animals and plants, as well as those that are involved in the husbandry, protection, destruction, etc. of these two subjects.

I remain neutral in this respect. I personally paid the price during a photo outing in a park, I wasn't able to identify what I had photographed, and I even made mistakes.[reply]
