Omstreeks 1400 deed het onderwerp “Maria met de inktpot” of “het schrijvende Jezuskind” zijn intrede in de Vlaamse kunst. De Vlaamse kunst kende op dat moment een grote bloei en vormde de grondslag voor de Vlaamse primitieven die stonden voor vakmanschap alsook voor een realistischer en expressievere vormgeving. Voor het thema van “Madonna met de inktpot” is nog geen afdoende verklaring gevonden. Sommigen zien hierin de opvoeding van het Kind door Zijn moeder.
