| Description |
In 1813 werd in opdracht van de Hervormde Kerk de begraafplaats Groenesteeg aangelegd. Toen het begraven in kerken definitief verboden werd, ontwierp stadsarchitect Salomon van der Paauw de inrichting van de begraafplaats. Hij ontwierp ook de aula, die in 1859 een bovenverdieping kreeg voor de grafmaker annex toezichthouder. Veel Leidse hoogleraren, bestuurders en industrielen zijn hier begraven. In 1976 werd de begraafplaats definitief gesloten en na restauratie in 1993-1995 opengesteld als stadspark.
