Description

In 1813 werd in opdracht van de Hervormde Kerk de begraafplaats Groenesteeg aangelegd. Toen het begraven in kerken definitief verboden werd, ontwierp stadsarchitect Salomon van der Paauw de inrichting van de begraafplaats. Hij ontwierp ook de aula, die in 1859 een bovenverdieping kreeg voor de grafmaker annex toezichthouder. Veel Leidse hoogleraren, bestuurders en industrielen zijn hier begraven. In 1976 werd de begraafplaats definitief gesloten en na restauratie in 1993-1995 opengesteld als stadspark. Zie ook: www.begraafplaatsgroenesteeg.nl


Cemetery founded in 1813 by the Reformed Church on a former bulwark. Used extensively from 1929 onward, when burials in the church were prohibited. Many Leiden scientists, administrators and industrials are buried here. Since 1995 it is a public park.
