DescriptionВодолюб большой чёрный - Hydrophilus piceus - Great Silver Water Beetle - Großer Kolbenwasserkäfer (30204198705).jpg |
English: This beetle is among the largest aquatic insects. It can exceed 5 centimeters in length and 2 centimeters in width; the head alone can be a centimeter long. Is omnivorous but favors plant material. It can live for up to 3 years. Swim reluctantly, making asynchronous movement of middle and hind limbs. They prefer to crawl on aquatic plants. In the spring, the adult female spins a cocoon, fills it with eggs (up to 140), and sets it afloat.
Distribution -Europe from southern Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, North Africa (known only in Egypt), the Caucasus, Central and Central Asia, Russia (South Siberia, Primorye), China, India. Hydrophilus piceus is considered to be extinct (EX) in Luxemburg and Norway, critically endangered (CR) in the Czech Republic, vulnerable (VU) in Slovakia and near threatened (NT) in Poland, Sweden and the UK.
