Description
Русский: На столбах, держащих звенья решетки, изображены эмблемы коммерции, связанные с греческим мифом о боге торговли, покровителе купцов Меркурии. На столбах рельефами изображены змеи, которые обвивают собой стержень. Легенда повествует, что Аполлон дал Меркурию ореховую трость, которая имела волшебное свойство прекращать споры и мирить врагов. Когда Меркурий бросил эту трость между двумя озлобленными змеями, они тотчас перестали кусать друг друга и дружно обвились вокруг трости. Жезл, перевитый двумя змеями, получил наименование кадуцей, и Меркурий традиционно изображался с кадуцеем в руках. Изображение на ограде кадуцея — символа коммерции было естественно в этом сугубо торговом районе Петербурга.
