佐佐木古登窯位於苗栗縣苗栗市中山路146號，於2001年入選臺灣歷史建築百景，為日本人在臺灣留下來的唯一燒陶登窯，登窯始於日本陶師佐佐木丈一昭和3（1928）年設立的「佐佐木製陶工場」，產製過數量極為豐富的各類陶瓷產品，紀錄了苗栗製陶發展的重要軌跡，是苗栗陶瓷發展的珍貴文化資產。 在臺灣常見的8種窯爐中，以蛇窯為主流，而登窯可算是非常「苗栗」的一種窯爐，日治時期由岩本東作引入苗栗，加上佐佐木丈一不吝傳授築窯方式，因此登窯成為苗栗使用最多、分布最廣的窯爐。登窯通常築於山坡地，窯室一間間連續組合沿階逐漸上升，利用地形高低所產生的熱空氣對流，使窯溫平均，窯裝、燒製、出窯可以同時進行，適合大量生產。佐佐木登窯為人工砌築斜坡，使用昭和2（1927）年石山丹吾等人成功開發的天然氣為燃料，是苗栗成為臺灣最早採用天然氣燒窯的歷史證物，現今還保留著當時的天然瓦斯管線。臺灣光復後，佐佐木返日，由劉金源承接經營權，再由其姪兒劉延彬接手經營，並於1970年代添購瓦斯梭仔窯生產裝飾陶瓷，登窯便從此停產閒置。登窯雖然幾經改建，仍保留相當多的傳統土磚砌築登窯的形式，隨著產業沒落，埋沒在荒煙蔓草之中，期待登窯能永續再生，亦為苗栗陶發展史上的重要教材。 |
