佐佐木古登窯位於苗栗縣苗栗市中山路146號,於2001年入選臺灣歷史建築百景,為日本人在臺灣留下來的唯一燒陶登窯,登窯始於日本陶師佐佐木丈一昭和3(1928)年設立的「佐佐木製陶工場」,產製過數量極為豐富的各類陶瓷產品,紀錄了苗栗製陶發展的重要軌跡,是苗栗陶瓷發展的珍貴文化資產。 在臺灣常見的8種窯爐中,以蛇窯為主流,而登窯可算是非常「苗栗」的一種窯爐,日治時期由岩本東作引入苗栗,加上佐佐木丈一不吝傳授築窯方式,因此登窯成為苗栗使用最多、分布最廣的窯爐。登窯通常築於山坡地,窯室一間間連續組合沿階逐漸上升,利用地形高低所產生的熱空氣對流,使窯溫平均,窯裝、燒製、出窯可以同時進行,適合大量生產。佐佐木登窯為人工砌築斜坡,使用昭和2(1927)年石山丹吾等人成功開發的天然氣為燃料,是苗栗成為臺灣最早採用天然氣燒窯的歷史證物,現今還保留著當時的天然瓦斯管線。臺灣光復後,佐佐木返日,由劉金源承接經營權,再由其姪兒劉延彬接手經營,並於1970年代添購瓦斯梭仔窯生產裝飾陶瓷,登窯便從此停產閒置。登窯雖然幾經改建,仍保留相當多的傳統土磚砌築登窯的形式,隨著產業沒落,埋沒在荒煙蔓草之中,期待登窯能永續再生,亦為苗栗陶發展史上的重要教材。 |
