Description
中文：这件《楷书八言联》，每联纵178、横46厘米，纸本。其联曰：“博学于文行已有耻；利居众后责在人先。” 此联上有书者题款，首联右款曰：“桐庐袁文忠节公昶寿”。据考，此“桐庐袁文忠节公昶”，即清末大臣袁昶。首联左款和尾联右款曰：“稼轩先生七十生日联语，今子温叟君属书，揭于先生之祠。老辈风范，不胜瞻致”。此“稼轩先生”，即清末学者吴昆田。此联应是张謇应淮安人士吴温叟所嘱托，为纪念袁昶寿辰而书写的对联。尾联署款曰：“宣统二年四月下旬后学张謇并识”，下钤“张謇季直甫之印”白文长方印。此“宣统二年”即1910年，时张謇任江苏咨议局局长，正筹划治理淮河事宜。在此前后，张謇在淮安清江浦设立江淮水利测量局，并调派通州师范测绘科师生来淮勘测。在此基础上，张謇撰写了《导淮计划宣告书》《导淮规划之概要》，并在淮安清江浦成立了治理淮河的机构导淮局。正是在此期间，张謇应淮阴名士吴温叟之嘱书写了这副对联，故在淮阴留下了这副书作。
