Summary

edit
Description In 1792 two diplomatic medals were made in France as gifts for former French ambassadors to the United States. The reverse had an original design of the Great Seal of the United States made by French engraver Augustin Dupré. The original medals have been lost, but in the 1800s a lead proof was found by Dupré's son, which the U.S. Mint used to make copies in time for the Centennial in 1876. This is a photo of a bronze copy.
