In 1901, the Olds Motor Body Works in Lansing, Michigan had been operating for 5 years when a fire destroyed everything. Only one car was saved, Olds risked his future on that one car, because he could not afford to recreate all that was lost. Lansing businessmen raised money for a new premises, he made tooling and used the specifications from that one car, he was back in business. 425 cars were built in the remainder of 1901 and then 2500 in 1902, 4000 in 1903, 5500 in 1904 and 6500 in 1905.
