| Description |
The Allard Motor Company Limited was a London based low volume car manufacturer founded in 1945 by Sydney Allard. Allards featured large American V8 engines in a light British chassis and body. The first pre war Allard cars were built specifically to compete in Trials events, powered mainly by Fords flathead V8 After the war 3 models were introduced; the J, a competition sports car; the K, a slightly larger car intended for road use, and the four seater L, later the drophead coupe M and P The 1950-52 J2 replaced the J and the 1952-54 J2X. Redesigned front suspension arrangement allowed the J2X engine to be positioned about 7 inches further forward than the J2 engine had been, improving the weight distribution also giving the driver more leg room. The longer nose sticks out beyond the front wheels (unlike the J2 where the nose stops even with the front of the front tires) Just 83 of these J2X models were built (90 J2s) This car with Cadillac 331 V8, the original owner, Texan Roy Cherryhomes employed Carroll Shelby to race the car in 1953 SCCA events, he placed first in 4 out of 5 races and second in the fifth. These wins kick started Shelby's racing career, he got a full time factory ride with Aston Martin in 1954. |
