Description

Edsel Ford introduced the Mercury in 1939 as a model to fill the gap between the basic Ford, and the luxury Lincoln. The Mercury Cougar was based on Fords pony car, the Mustang from 1967-73, then the Ford Torino form 1974-80. The first generation Cougar was built from 1967-70, it was 3 inches longer than the Mustang and more luxurious. In 1967, it got a full-width divided 'electric shaver' grille with hidden headlamps. Only available as a two door Hardtop, it was available in base or the luxury XR-7 (woodgrain dash and steering wheel, centre and overhead consoles). Base engine was the 200hp 289 V8. The GT Performance package was available on both models (390 V8, upgraded suspension and better brakes) In 1968, the Cougar got side marker lights, the 210hp 302 was now the base engine on XR-7s (289 still in the base model), the 335hp 428 was available on the GT. 619 XR-7Gs were produced, any engine but they got hood scoop, fog lamps, and hood pins. The new GT-E package; 357 built with the 390hp 427 V8 and 37 built with the 410hp 428SCJ.

1969 saw a facelift, new model names and a convertible was available.
