Description

England / New Zealand. Morris merged with Austin in 1952 to form BMC (British Motor Corporation). Then in 1968 merged with Leyland to become British Leyland Motor Corporation. BMC's small car was the Mini, built in the UK and the Mk I built in Australia as well. 1959-67 Mk I; (until 1970 in Australia) 848cc transversely mounted engine, front wheel drive, independent suspension, 10 inch wheels, sliding side windows and external door hinges. Available in 2 door Saloon (1959-2000), Estate (1960-69), Van and Pickup (1960-83), Moke (1964-89). The Mini Cooper (1961-71). twin SU carbs, close ratio gearbox and front disc brakes, 997cc. The Cooper S (1963-2000), got the 1071 cc and 1275cc from 1964. 1967-70 Mk II; new front grille design, larger rear window and rectangular rear lights. 1969-76 Mk III, simple name 'Mini' replaced the separate Austin and Morris brands. The Mk III Mini got internal door hinges and wind up windows. (Australian-manufactured Mark I Minis had adopted this feature in 1965) New style Mini also available, the Clubman with a squarer looking front (1969-80) 1976-83 Mk IV; Reverse lights, Austin Mini from 1980 1984-89 Mk V; Plastic wheel arches, Rover Mini from 1988 1990-95 MK VI; Fuel injection, 998cc dropped all 1275cc
