| Description |
Pseudocyphellaria glabra (J.D. Hook. & Taylor) Dodge Image location: Parque Nacional Puyehue, Los Lagos, Chile On twig in damp dark oldgrowth Vadivian rainforest near waterfall in Anticura. Key characteristics: green algae, white medulla and pseudocyphellae, smooth and glabrous surface above, dark brown tomentum below, apothecia with ragged “crown”, isidia/lobulae along margin and sometimes on surface (very few visible in this specimen). Chemistry: usnic acid in cortex (KC+ gold), medulla trace amounts of various B-orsinol depsidones (K- or K+ weak yellow to orange). Note, P. exanthematica shares most of the above features, but is strictly a southern species, ranging only up to 50°S. Specimen #20081220.9 Used references: Thanks to Tim Wheeler for this ID. Specimens like this scarcely with any isidia do not work in Galloway’s keys at all.
