Barockbau aus dem 17. und 18 Jahrhundert. Das Rittergut heißt eigentlich Klein-Wölkau. Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts bürgerte sich der Name "Schönwölkau" ein. Das Schloß Schönwölkau, das sich nicht hinter den großen Residenzen des europäischen Adels zu verstecken brauchte, erinnert noch heute an die Grafen Vitzthum von Eckstädt, die hier bis 1945 die Herrschaft ausübten. Christoph Vitzthum von Eckstädt ließ den zerstörten Gutshof nach 1660 durch einen weiträumigen Neubau ersetzen. Der Bau der Vierflügelanlage zog sich über einen längeren Zeitraum hin. Das belegen die Jahreszahlen 1695 und 1703, die auf der Hofseite des Südflügels über den seitlichen Eingangsportalen angebracht sind. Nach 1712 wurde der Mitteltrakt des Südflügels in hochbarocken Formen umgestaltet. Mit der Enteignung im Herbst 1945 ging aus dem Rittergut Schönwölkau das Volksgut Wölkau hervor. Der Südflügel des Schlosses diente in der DDR-Zeit als Kreiskulturhaus, während in den übrigen Teilen Wohnungen eingerichtet waren.
