La plupart des temples sont construits en grès, certains sont en granite. Ils font partie des chefs-d’œuvre de l'art hindou. Leurs décors sculptés les ont rendus mondialement célèbres à cause des figures érotiques qui s'y trouvent mais il faut souligner que ces thèmes ne représentent qu'une petite partie de l'ensemble des décors de ces temples. Le sens à donner à ces sculptures érotiques a fait l'objet de multiples interprétations. Certains y ont vu une dérive des pratiques rituelles hindoues et de l'adoration du linga, d'autres des préoccupations didactiques pour les jeunes brahmanes, d'autres encore des formes figurées du culte tantrique. En effet, l'idéal suprême du Tantra s'exprime dans une vision de sexualité cosmique. où l'acte sexuel est le symbole de ce culte et du bonheur humain. Cet acte est censé mener à l'Illumination. Dans l'Hindouisme, Kâma est le dieu-de-l'érotisme, c'est l'un des principes universels. Ainsi, selon Alain Daniélou (Mythes et Dieux de l'Inde, Flammarion, 1992), des images érotiques doivent être sculptées sur les parois du temple pour satisfaire Kâma et libérer l'esprit du désir. Car ce n'est pas le plaisir mais le désir qui lie l'Homme et qui est un obstacle à son progrès spirituel.
