Description

Apollo 14 Hasselblad image from film magazine 64/LL - EVA-2.
This is Figure 1-25 of the Apollo 14 Preliminary Science Report (SP-272), which has the following caption:

Rock fragments were comparatively rare on the surface between the LM and the foot of the ridge capped by Cone Crater. Complex surface textures are present in most of the photographs of sites in this smooth terrain. The gnomon in the upper left provides orientation and scale data. A square target attached to the near leg of the gnomon provides calibration data that enhance the photometric interpretation of lunar photography.

The photo is also used in figure 3-34 of the Report, which has the following caption:

Sample 14047 before collection.

The text of the Report states:

Sample 14047. Sample 14047 was collected at station B from the west rim of a sharp 5-mdiameter crater during the second EVA. It is a poorly indurated clod that was located on a gently sloping and moderately undulating area. Sample 14047 is approximately 10 cm long and is one of the few rocks this size seen in the stereopair (AS14-64-9073 and AS14-64-9074), although the panorama taken at station B shows many rocks and boulders larger than 10 cm in the general immediate vicinity. The lunar-surface orientation of the sample is shown in figures 3-34 and 3-35. It should be noted that the glass-covered surface was buried at the time the sample was collected.
